Remote PPP/DUN ServerBeta Version 1Robert Merrison, 2002darkeye@exile.asylumnet.orghttps://sourceforge.net/projects/remote-pppThis is an extremely early version of a server for my remote PPP/DUN system, for which there is also a Windows client available at the address above.Basically what this server does is to accept connections from clients and provide them with information about the current status of a PPP connection,and allow them to remotely connect/disconnect the link. This is very useful when a modem connection is being hosted on a machine other than the client,and dial-on-demand is not desirable. For the moment, the server uses WVdial only to manage the connection, but I intend to make it more generic in the future. A password is used to ensure only authorised clients can control the connection.Configuration is very simple at the moment. There is a sample rDUNd.conf contained in this package. The only options it supports at present are:LISTEN_PORT - The port the server listens on (default is 2244 )PASSWORD - Password which clients must give to connectThe file start_wvdial contains the line which is called when the connection needs bringing up. Please note that the 3>wv_out is essential, as the server reads status information from wv_out. 2>/dev/null is not needed, but without it WVdial will post (mainly useless) stuff to the terminal. I have found a few problems when using 2>wv_out as well as 3>wv_out, so this is not recommended, but feel free to add any extra params that you need passing to wvdial.Debug logging is also very basic at present. If you are having a problem, the two places to look are debug.log and wv_out.Please note that this is an extremely basic release, and there are no doubt a fair amount of bugs. I also have an extremely long list of features to add, including much better support for logging and configuration. Processor usage is also higher than I would like, but I have a few ideas about how to lower this. Stability is a slight issue, there seems to be a bug that causes it to hang occasionally, but I usually see at least a month's gap between crashes. Finding the cause of these crashes is my main concern at the moment. I really don't know how secure the server is, so I definitely don't recommend running this on a security-critical host.Since this is my first publicly released project, I would be extremely grateful if you could send me any comments/suggestions you have about it, even if you just tell me it worked/didn't work.
