<H2>Disk Drive Selection </H2>
<P>Most IDE drives will work with this MP3 player. The player supports =
both 3.5=94=20
and 2.5=94 IDE harddrives. Connectors are provided on the board for both =
types=20
(although you can only have one drive plugged into the player at a =
time). </P>
<P>Drives must be relatively modern; anything from 1994 onwards should =
be fine.=20
Very old drives such as the ancient MFM drives will not work. To a large =
degree=20
this is self-limiting, in that very old drives also have very small (and =
hence=20
uninteresting) capacities. Another way of saying it might be, that any =
drive 1=20
GB or larger should work fine.</P>
<P>If you=92re purchasing a new drive for the player, I=92d suggest =
obtaining a=20
drive with an 8 MB cache (also called =93buffer size=94). Most IDE =
drives come=20
standard with a 2 MB cache. I=92ve found that the drive generally runs =
quieter=20
& cooler playing MP3s if it has an 8 MB cache. The larger cache is a =
common=20
option from several drive vendors. I=92ve had very good luck with the 8 =
MB cache=20
versions of the Western Digital =93Caviar=94 series of drives. See for=20

<BR>Western Digital call them their =93Special Edition=94 series of =
drives, but in=20
practice they=92re close to the same price as their standard 2MB cache =
models.=20
Other vendors also make drives with 8 MB caches.</P>
<P>The maximum harddisk size supported by the player is 137 GB. (This is =
a=20
software limitation; it could be updated to go beyond this, but that=92s =
low on=20
the priority list right now.) The drive must be formatted as a FAT32 =
drive, and=20
fragmented disks are OK. It=92s not necessary to defragment the drive. =
</P>
<P>To obtain FAT32 formatting under a Microsoft OS, say =93yes=94 when =
asked if you=20
wish to enable large hard drive support. Then, if you=92re asked if you =
want NTFS,=20
say =93no=94 to that. (Win85/98/ME won=92t ask about NTFS). </P>
<P>You can check what formatting scheme has been used on the drive in a =
couple=20
of ways. FDISK will tell you. Alternatively, under Windows Explorer, =
right-click=20
on the drive, select =93properties=94, and you=92ll see the information =
on that page=20
as well. This formatting business might sound complicated but it=92s =
really not;=20
under Windows you only have two choices for large harddrive support: =
FAT32 and=20
NTFS. You just want make sure you don=92t get NTFS by mistake.</P>
<P>Some people have asked about defragmenting the disk. If you want to, =
sure, go=20
ahead, it won=92t hurt. On a large disk with a lot of files it can take =
quite a=20
while. It=92s not necessary though; the player will handle fragmented =
files. If=20
you have reason to believe your drive is badly fragmented you might want =
to=20
defragment it, just to make the player=92s life a little easier. But as =
a general=20
rule you shouldn=92t have to do that.</P>
<P>The PCB contains mounting holes which line up with the threaded holes =
on a=20
3.5=94 drive. This makes it simple to bolt a 3.5=94 drive and the MP3 =
player main=20
board together. If you can=92t decide whether to use a 3.5=94 or 2.5=94 =
drive this=20
might be a deciding factor.</P>
