Certain things have to bedone by the author because its rather difficult to implementthem in \LaTeXe.\section{OTHER PACKAGES}Be very carefull when using the CHI 96 class with other packages.Esp. when these packages change the page dimensions. For example,if you use the a4 package with chi96, you will get wrong page dimension.Another point: don't use tools like \textsf{babel} or the like. This isno real problem, since the required language for proceedings is english.\section{TITLE}There is a little thing to note about the title. We want to usethe |multicolumn| package to balance the columns on the last page.And we want to do it transparent, so the user must \textit{not}begin multicolumn mode or end it. To do this, |chi96.cls| switchesmulticolumn mode on when it sees the |\begin{document}| clause.And because we want the title to span across the whole page weissue |\maketitle| at that moment, too. So, the author has to specifyits |\title| and |\author| commands in the preamble of the work,\textit{before} the |\begin{document}|. Although |chi96| calls |\maketitle|automatic we advise the use of an `additional' |\maketitle| commandafter the |\begin{document}| clause, since when \textit{not} using|multicolumn| but |twocolumn| we'll need it. It will not hurt, sinceafter the first |\maketitle| call the macro is redefined to be |\relax|.Another small problem: The authors name shall be printed in \textbf{boldface}.There are two possible solutions: split the |\author| macro by specifyingan additional macro |\address|. Or take care of it yourself. We providethe second solution:-)\section{SECTIONS}CHI wants section titles to be all uppercase, subsectionsshould have only the first letter capitalized. Please, takecare of that for yourself.\section{COPYRIGHT}The copyright box should be 2.5cm on the bottom of the first page,first column. This could be done by changing certain things in|multicols|-package which is, to be frankly, very difficultand may break other features. Please take care of the copyright boxby using explicit space in the following form:\begin{verbatim}\vspace*{2.5cm}\end{verbatim}Maybe you have to move this a little bit around until it fits. Sorryfor the inconvinience.The same applies to the second copyright, as shown in |camera2.tex|.You have to enter the line\textbf{\emph{\copyright{}~Copyright~on~this~material~is~held~by~the~author(s)!}}by hand.\section{GENERAL}You will probably notice differences when comparing a work written with\textsf{WORD} under Microsoft Windows or MacOS. There's nothing we or you cando about that. \TeX's linebreaking algorithm is different from the one usedby common Wordprocessors. We don't say its better because we don'twant to start a religious war right here. Its just different. Most of thetime this will result in a longer document, compared to a similar Wordprocessoroutput. (In fact, this may be rather small. For example, the \LaTeXe{} versionof |camera1| is about 4 lines longer than its \textsf{WORD} counterpart. Andthis is caused by a format violation by the \textsf{WORD} version\dots)\section{FONTS}The default CHI~96 font ist \textit{Times Roman}, which is only availiablewith the option |psfonts| for \LaTeXe{} users. This requires the |times| style, which is part of the \textsf{psnfss} package, to be installed.\section{COLUMNS}We provide two methods for the required two column layout. The first isthe builtin |twocolumn| option, the second needs the package |multicols|from \LaTeXe's |tool| collection. We think the second is better because itbalances the columns on the last page. \section{Other \LaTeXe{} features}We have tried many different \LaTeXe{} files with this class but we are\emph{not} sure we covered every possible problem. So expect problems,esp. if you are working with tables and figures. (Note the restricitons forfloating objects together with the |multicols| package.) Contact usif you experience problems, we will try to provide at least a work around.It does work with \LaTeXe{} in compatibility mode, i.e. a current \LaTeXe{}emulating old \LaTeX{} 2.09. We can not guarantee for older versions,either \LaTeX{} or \LaTeXe{}. But, if it fails for your version, pleasesend us a short bug report, outlining the problems or errors you get.\section{Conclusion}That's about it.
