<P style=3D"TEXT-ALIGN: justify">Orthogonal Frequency =
Division=20
Multiplexing (OFDM) is a powerful technique employed in=20
communications systems suffering from frequency selectivity. =
Combined with multiple antennas at the transmitter and =
receiver as=20
well as adaptive modulation, OFDM proves to be robust =
against=20
channel delay spread. Furthermore, it leads to significant =
data=20
rates with improved bit error performance over links having =
only a=20
single antenna at both the transmitter and receiver.</P>
<P style=3D"TEXT-ALIGN: justify">This project demonstrates =
OFDM with=20
adaptive modulation applied to Multiple-Input =
Multiple-Output (MIMO)=20
systems. We apply an optimization algorithm to obtain a bit =
and=20
power allocation for each subcarrier assuming instantaneous =
channel=20
knowledge. The analysis and simulation is considered in two =
stages.=20
The first stage involves the application of a variable-rate=20
variable-power MQAM technique for a Single-Input =
Single-Output=20
(SISO) OFDM system. This is compared with the performanc eof =
fixed=20
OFDM transmission where a constant rate is applied to each=20
subcarrier. The second stage applies adaptive modulation to =
a=20
general MIMO system by making use of the Singular Value=20
Decomposition to separate the MIMO channel into parallel=20
subchannels. For a two-input antenna, two-output antenna =
system, the=20
performance is compared with the performance of a system =
using=20
selection diversity at the transmitter and maximal ratio =
combining=20
