<title>Universities Space Automation Robotics Consortium home page.</title><center><h1> <!WA0><img src="http://www.cs.tamu.edu/research/robotics/usarc/usarc2.gif"> </h1></center><hr>The Universities Space Automation/Robotics Consortium (USARC) is a uniqueinfrastructure for distributed robotics, remote operations, anddistributed simulation research. Using a object-oriented protocoland the Internet, this distributed laboratory consists of sites at fiveuniversities ( <!WA1><a href="http://www.tamu.edu/default.html"> Texas A&M University</a>, <!WA2><a href="http://www.utexas.edu"> University of Texas at Austin</a>,<!WA3><a href="http://www.uta.edu"> UT Arlington</a>, <!WA4><a href="http://cs.utep.edu/utep/main.html">UT El Paso </a>, and <!WA5><a href="http://riceinfo.rice.edu">Rice University</a>) and <!WA6><a href="http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/jsc/home.html">NASA's JohnsonSpace Center</a>. The distributed laboratory configuration provides theopportunity to quantitatively study the effects of various systemcomponents and technologies on overall telerobotic task performance. <br><br>Wehave successfully implemented and demonstrated (first in Feb. 1991) theability to execute representative inspection and manipulation taskswith multiple control, robot, and performance/workload monitoringsites simultaneously connected. Operations are carried out on a routinebasis. During the process, needs for hardware and software standardsdevelopment have been identified.
