Thiscomputing system comprises an integrated ensemble of computing andcommunication elements, organized to provide the user with a number ofservices that we think will characterize the practice of computing intothe next century. The most important of these are (i) multimedia(especially video) capabilities in delivery vehicles, storage andcommunication, (ii) huge computing power (especially from clustersof workstations operating as a single parallel computer) and enormousstorage space, (iii) innovative parallel languages, debuggers, andlibraries, and (iv) high accessibility from mobile as well as fixedlocations.

<!WA0> Progress Report 1995-96
<!WA1> Progress Report 1994-95
<!WA2> Project Presentation 1995 NSF IIG PI Meeting, Duke University, June 1995.

Primary Components of the Project

Core Computing Component

<!WA3>NOW forms the architecture and operating systems portion of the core computing component ofTitan.
<!WA4>Castle forms the parallel programming and compilation portion of the Core.

<!WA5>Media Component
<!WA6>Driving Applications
<!WA7>General CS Research Infrastructure

NOW: Architecture and OS for a Network of Workstations
<!WA8>NOW: Network of Workstations as a High Performance Integrated System

Areas of Research within the NOW Component

<!WA9> Active Messages: Fast Communication Primitives (Culler)
<!WA10> Fast implementations of conventional communication layers. Fast Sockets and MPI.
