<P style="TEXT-INDENT: 2em">在傳統的多載波通信系統中，整個系統頻帶被劃分為若干個互相分離的子信道（載波）。載波之間有一定的保護間隔，接收端通過濾波器把各個子信道分離之后接收所需信息。這樣雖然可以避免不同信道互相干擾，但卻以犧牲頻率利用率為代價。而且當子信道數量很大的時候，大量分離各子信道信號的濾波器的設置就成了幾乎不可能的事情。</P>
<P style="TEXT-INDENT: 2em">上個世紀中期，人們提出了頻帶混疊的多載波通信方案，選擇相互之間正交的載波頻率作子載波，也就是我們所說的OFDM。這種“正交”表示的是載波頻率間精確的數學關系。按照這種設想，OFDM既能充分利用信道帶寬，也可以避免使用高速均衡和抗突發噪聲差錯。OFDM是一種特殊的多載波通信方案，單個用戶的信息流被串/并變換為多個低速率碼流，每個碼流都用一個子載波發送。OFDM不用帶通濾波器來分隔子載波，而是通過快速傅立葉變換（FFT）來選用那些即便混疊也能夠保持正交的波形。</P>
<P style="TEXT-INDENT: 2em">OFDM是一種無線環境下的高速傳輸技術。無線信道的頻率響應曲線大多是非平坦的，而OFDM技術的主要思想就是在頻域內將給定信道分成許多正交子信道，在每個子信道上使用一個子載波進行調制，并且各子載波并行傳輸。這樣，盡管總的信道是非平坦的，具有頻率選擇性，但是每個子信道是相對平坦的，在每個子信道上進行的是窄帶傳輸，信號帶寬小于信道的相應帶寬，因此就可以大大消除信號波形間的干擾。由于在OFDM系統中各個子信道的載波相互正交，它們的頻譜是相互重疊的，這樣不但減小了子載波間的相互干擾，同時又提高了頻譜利用率。</P>
