<h1>MySQL User Mailman Lists</h1>
<h4>Introduction</h4>
<p>
One of the biggest problems with each user running their own MySQL server on
their own account is that when the web development servers must be restarted,
each user needs to start their MySQL server back up when the server is
available again.
</p>
<p>
One way that we've attempted to address this problem is with our
<a href="http://www.washington.edu/computing/web/publishing/mysql-admin.html#3">cron job instructions</a> that tell how to use a
cron job to start your MySQL server automatically when the server is restarted.
</p>
<p>
Another way that we've attempted to deal with this is by sending the users
running MySQL an email notification when the servers have gone down, or when they
will need to be restarted. This has turned out to be unreliable, and possibly
more work that it's worth. Many people have MySQL running on supplemental
accounts, and have failed to forward email from those accounts to their
personal accounts. This means that they won't be properly notified by this
method.
</p>
<p>
This page and the Mailman lists it advertises are an attempt to systematize
the means of contacting MySQL users on the web development systems for greater
reliability and ease of use. When downtime is planned for the systems or when
the systems have gone down and MySQL users should restart their databases,
any email sent to users to inform them of the situation will be sent to the list.
</p>
<p>
If you're accustomed to receiving the notification emails that have been sent
in the past, you should sign up for the Mailman list, as those emails will no
longer be sent to each user.
