A power semiconductor module is basically a power circuit of different materials assembled together using hybrid technology, such as semiconduc- tor chip attachment, wire bonding, encapsulation, ETC. The materials involved cover a wide range from insulators, conductors, and semiconduc- tors to organics and inorganics. Since these materials all behave differently under various environmental, electrical, and thermal stresses, proper selec- tion of these materials and the assembly processes are critical. In-depth knowledge of the material properties and the processing techniques is there- fore required to build a high-performance and highly reliable power module.

Internet of Things (IoT) [26] is a new networking paradigm for cyber-physical systems that allow physical objects to collect and exchange data. This introductory chapter is devoted to reviewing the fundamental ideas of control from a multivariable point of view. In some cases, the mathematics and operations on systems (modelling, pole placement, ETC.), as previously treated in introductory courses and textbooks, convey to the readers an un- realistic image of systems engineering. The simplifying assumptions, simple examples and “perfect” model set-up usually used in these scenarios present the control problem as a pure mathematical problem, sometimes losing the physical meaning of the involved concepts and operations. We try to empha- sise the engineering implication of some of these concepts and, before entering into a detailed treatment of the different topics, a general qualitative overview is provided in this chapter.

This book will discuss the topic of Control Systems, which is an interdisciplinary engineering topic. Methods considered here will consist of both "Classical" control methods, and "Modern" control methods. Also, discretely sampled systems (digital/computer systems) will be considered in parallel with the more common analog methods. This book will not focus on any single engineering discipline (electrical, mechanical, chemical, ETC.), although readers should have a solid foundation in the fundamentals of at least one discipline.

Wherever possible the overall technique used for this series will be "definition by example" withgeneric formulae included for use in other applications. To make stability analysis easy we will usemore than one tool from our toolbox with data sheet information, tricks, rules-of-thumb, SPICESimulation, and real-world testing all accelerating our design of stable operational amplifier (op amp)circuits. These tools are specifically targeted at voltage feedback op amps with unity-gain bandwidths<20 MHz, although many of the techniques are applicable to any voltage feedback op amp. 20 MHz ischosen because as we increase to higher bandwidth circuits there are other major factors in closing theloop: such as parasitic capacitances on PCBs, parasitic inductances in capacitors, parasitic inductancesand capacitances in resistors, ETC. Most of the rules-of-thumb and techniques were developed not justfrom theory but from the actual building of real-world circuits with op amps <20 MHz.
