THis book is the outcome of the panel discussions held on the special event honor-
ing first 50 PhD students of Prof. Ramjee Prasad. Several of His PhD students are
today worldwide telecommunication leaders themselves. Over 60 post-docs, PhDs,
colleagues and the scientific staff were present at the event to celebrate the research
and development achievements in the field of mobile and wireless communication.

One of the very first books published on the social impact of the mobile phone
was Timo Kopomaa’s The City in Your Pocket: Birth of the Mobile Information Society.
The book, published in 2000, was based on research that Kopomaa had under-
taken for Nokia and Sonera as part of His doctoral studies in the Centre for Urban
and Regional Studies at the Helsinki University of Technology. The first line he
writes in the book is peculiar: ‘Mobile communication is not a serious matter’. By
tHis, we assume he is referring to a view of the world that would regard the mobile
phone as little more than an unremarkable fact of everyday life – a simple play-
thing for the young, or a productivity tool for the business executive and busy
parent.

His research aims at creating broadband tunable, fully integrated filters for the application of
cognitive radio and signal classification receivers. The approach under study is the N-path filter
technique which is capable of translating a baseband impedance to a reference frequency creating
a tunable filter. The traditional N-path filter suffers from fundamental architectural limitations,
namely : a trade-off between insertion loss and out-of-band rejection, reference clock feed-
through, and jammer power handling limitations. In the first approach, the fundamental trade-
off of the traditional N-path filter between insertion loss and out-of-band rejection is improved by
a transmission line (T-line) N-path filter technique.

energy managers and web based energy infor-
mation and control systems. THis book concentrates on
web based enterprise energy and building automation
systems, and serves as a capstone volume in tHis series.
The thrust here is that the highest level functions of a
building and facility automation system are provided
by a web based EIS/ECS system that provides energy
management, maintenance management, overall facility
operational management, and ties in with the enterprise
resource management system for the entire facility or
the group of facilities being managed. If there were ever
to be a fourth volume in tHis series, it would follow
the logical progression of the first three volumes, and
would probably be titled Web Based Enterprise Resource
Management Systems.

It all started rather innocuously. I walked into Dr GT Murthy’s office one fine day, andchanged my life. “Doc” was then the General Manager, Central R&D, of a very largeelectrical company headquartered in Bombay. In His new state-of-the-art electronics center,he had hand-picked some of India’s best engineers (over a hundred already) ever assembledunder one roof. Luckily, he too was originally a Physicist, and that certainly helped me gainsome empathy. Nowadays he is in retirement, but I will always remember him as athoroughly fair, honest and facts-oriented person, who led by example. There were severalthings I absorbed from him that are very much part of my basic engineering persona today.You can certainly look upon tHis book as an extension of what Doc started many years agoin India … because that’s what it really is! I certainly wouldn’t be here today if I hadn’t metDoc. And in fact, several of the brash, high-flying managers I’ve met in recent years,desperately need some sort of crash course in technology and human values from Doc!
