During the past decade, many wireless communication techniques have been developedto achievevariousgoals suchas higherdata rate,morerobustlink quality, and higher number of users in a given bandwidth. For wireless communication SYSTEMS, depending on the availability of a feedback link, two approaches can be considered: namely open and closed loop. Open loop communication system that does not exploit the channel knowledge at the transmitter is now well understood from both a theoretical and practical point of view.

Today, a great variety of technical publications offer background information about these technologies but they all fall short in one way or another. Books covering these technologies usually describe only one of the SYSTEMS in detail and are generally too complex as a first introduction. The Internet is also a good source, but the articles one finds are usually too short and super- ficial or only deal with a specific mechanism of one of the SYSTEMS. For this reason, it was difficult for me to recommend a single publication to students in my telecommunication classes, which I have been teaching in addition to my work in the wireless telecommunication industry. This book aims to change this.

This book is an entry-level text on the technology of telecommunications. It has been crafted with the newcomer in mind. The twenty-one chapters of text have been prepared for high-school graduates who understand algebra, logarithms, and the basic principles of electricity such as Ohm’s law. However, it is appreciated that many readers require support in these areas. Appendices A and B review the essentials of electricity and mathematics up through logarithms. This material was placed in the appendices so as not to distract from the main theme, the technology of telecommunication SYSTEMS. Another topic that many in the industry find difficult is the use of decibels and derived units. Appendix C provides the reader a basic understanding of decibels and their applications. With the rapid growth in the number of wireless applications, services and devices, using a single wireless technology such as a second generation (2G) and third gener- ation (3G) wireless system would not be efficient to deliver high speed data rate and quality-of-service (QoS) support to mobile users in a seamless way. In this paper we revisit hybrid analog-digital precoding SYSTEMS with emphasis on their modelling and radio-frequency (RF) losses, to realistically evaluate their benefits in 5G system implementations. For this, we decompose the analog beamforming networks (ABFN) as a bank of commonly used RF components and formulate realistic model constraints based on their S-parameters. Specifically, we concentrate on fully-connected ABFN (FC-ABFN) and Butler networks for implementing the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) in the RF domain. The results presented in this paper reveal that the performance and energy efficiency of hybrid precoding SYSTEMS are severely affected, once practical factors are considered in the overall design. In this context, we also show that Butler RF networks are capable of providing better performances than FC-ABFN for SYSTEMS with a large number of RF chains.

This book is intended for RF planners, to serve as a practical tool in their daily work designing indoor radio distribution SYSTEMS. Based on feedback from readers of the first edition it was clear to me that I needed to add more material and in depth description of the basics of indoor SYSTEMS based on using repeaters; this has grown into a new Section 4.7. There was also a strong demand to add more detail and dedicate a full chapter to radio planning in tunnels, for both rail and road tunnels; and redundancy principles in the design focus for solving the challenge of handover zones. An entire Chapter 11 is now dedicated to tunnel radio planning.
