  • Bio Medical CMOS IC

    A major societal challenge for the decades to come will be the delivery of effective medical services while at the same time curbing the growing cost of healthcare. It is expected that new concepts-particularly electronically assisted healthcare will provide an answer. This will include new devices, new medical services as well as networking. On the device side, impressive innovation has been made possible by micro- and nanoelectronics or CMOS Integrated Circuits. Even higher accuracy and smaller form factor combined with reduced cost and increased convenience of use are enabled by incorporation of CMOS IC design in the realization of biomedical systems. The compact hearing aid devices and current pacemakers are good examples of how CMOS ICs bring about these new functionalities and services in the medical field. Apart from these existing applications, many researchers are TRYing to develop new bio-medical solutions such as Artificial Retina, Deep Brain Stimulation, and Wearable Healthcare Systems. These are possible by combining the recent advances of bio-medical technology with low power CMOS IC technology.

  • Multi-point Cooperative Communication Systems

    This book is about multipoint cooperative communication, a key technology to overcome the long-standing problem of limited transmission rate caused by inter- point interference. However, the multipoint cooperative communication is not an isolated technology. Instead, it covers a vast range of research areas such as the multiple-input multiple-outputsystem, the relay network, channel state information issues, inter-point radio resource management operations, coordinated or joint transmissions, etc. We suppose that any attempt TRYing to thoroughly analyze the multipoint cooperative communication technology might end up working on a cyclopedia for modern communication systems and easily get lost in discussing all kinds of cooperative communication schemes as well as the associated models and their variations.

  • System Requirements Analysis

    The serious study of the practice of how to determine the appropriate content of a specification is a seldom-appreciated pastime. Those who have the responsibility to design a product would prefer a greater degree of freedom than permitted by the con- tent of a specification. Many of those who would manage those who would design a product would prefer to allocate all of the project funding and schedule to what they consider more productive labor. These are the attitudes, of course, that doom a project to defeat but they are hard to counter no matter how many times repeated by design engineers and managers. A system engineer who has survived a few of these experiences over a long career may retire and forget the past but we have an endur- ing obligation to work toward changing these attitudes while TRYing to offer younger system engineers a pathway toward a more sure success in requirements analysis and specification publishing.

We have tried to explore the full breadth of the field, which encompasses logic, probability, and continuous mathematics; perception, reasoning, learning, and action; and everything from microelectronic devices to robotic planetary explorers. The book is also big because we go into some depth. The subtitle of this book is “A Modern Approach.” The intended meaning of this rather empty phrase is that we have tried to synthesize what is now known into a common frame- work, rather than TRYing to explain each subfield of AI in its own historical context. We apologize to those whose subfields are, as a result, less recognizable.
