As programmers outside of Japan learn about the benefits of Ruby, there is a growing need for documentation in English. The first book I wrote for O Reilly, Ruby Pocket Reference, was in Japanese. Since then Ruby has changed significantly. To meet the needs of non-Japanese programmers, we translated, updated, and expanded Ruby Pocket Reference into Ruby in a Nutshell.
This a simple database management system. It doesn t use any other code (i.e. ODBC, ADO, etc.) and has it s own database file format. I wrote it because I found the other DBMSs code too bulky and hard to debug. It s designed for small applications and I doubt it could handle anything on a large scale. A sample program included in the .zip shows how everything works. The database project is a library project, so you ll have to compile and link with the .lib file to get everything working. Pros: - You have the source code so you know exactly what it is doing - Database files are very small - Small and fast code Cons: - Can t handle large amounts of records (more than 65000ish) - Doesn t support SQL (you have to search the database by cycling through the records and testing them against your constraints) - Each database file can only have one table.
If a tree falls in the forest, and there s nobody there to hear, does it make a sound? This classic conundrum was coined by George Berkeley (1685-1753), the Bishop and influential Irish philosopher whose primary philosophical achievement is the advancement of what has come to be called subjective idealism. He wrote a number of works, of which the most widely-read are Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge (1710) and Three Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous (1713) (Philonous, the "lover of the mind," representing Berkeley himself).
Some time during my development works I had the need of printing the contents of a ListView control. So I wrote down the code for a custom control, named PrintableListView, that solved the following two problems:

A few years ago I became interested in first person shooter games and in particular how the world levels are created and rendered in real time. At the same time I found myself in between jobs and so I embarked on an effort to learn about 3D rendering with the goal of creating my own 3D rendering engine. Since I am a developer and not an artist I didn’t have the skills to create my own models, levels, and textures. So I decided to attempt to write a rendering engine that would render existing game levels. I mainly used information and articles I found on the web about Quake 2, Half Life, WAD and BSP files. In particular I found the Michael Abrash articles that he wrote for Dr. Dobbs magazine while working at Id to be very illuminating.
Yet another mp3 player, but this time using SVGALib under Linux. The idea was to use a 320x240 display which can be used in a vehicle. I wrote this quite a few years ago, before mp3 players were so cheap. It uses mpg123 for the mp3 decoding.
A decade ago, I first wrote that people moved, and networks needed to adapt to the
reality that people worked on the go. Of course, in those days, wireless LANs came
with a trade-off. Yes, you could use them while moving, but you had to trade a great
deal of throughput to get the mobility. Although it was possible to get bits anywhere,
even while in motion, those bits came slower. As one of the network engineers I worked
with put it, “We’ve installed switched gigabit Ethernet everywhere on campus, so I
don’t understand why you’d want to go back to what is a 25-megabit hub.” He un-
derestimated the allure of working on the go.
I wrote this book so that students, hobbyists, and engineers alike can take advantage of the Arduino
platform by creating several projects that will teach them about the engineering process. I also wanted to
guide the reader through introductory projects so that they could get a firm grasp on the Arduino
Language, and how to incorporate several pieces of hardware to make their own projects.
This book offers so much information on the Arduino, not just the basic LED projects but it
offers different peripherals such as Ultrasonic sensor, the Xbox? controller, Bluetooth, and much more.
This book also teaches the non-engineer to follow a process that will help them in future project (not just
Arduino projects).
