The roots of this book were planted about a decade ago. At that time, I became
increasingly convinced that wide-area and metropolitan-area networks, where much
of my group’s research has been centered at that time, were in good shape. Although
research in these fields was (and still is) needed, that’s not where the networking
bottleneck seemed to be. Rather, the bottleneck was (and still is in many places) in
the access networks, which choked users’ access to information and services. It was
clear to me that the long-term solution to that problem has to involve optical fiber
access networks.

The goal of this book is to provide a concise but lucid explanation and deriva-
tion of the fundamentals of spread-spectrum communication systems. Although
spread-spectrum communication is a staple topic in textbooks on digital com-
munication, its treatment is usually cursory, and the subject warrants a more
intensive exposition. Originally adopted in military networks as a means of
ensuring secure communication when confronted with the threats of jamming
and interception, spread-spectrum systems are now the core of commercial ap-
plications such as mobile cellular and satellite communication.

Cognitive radios have become a vital solution that allows sharing of the scarce
frequency spectrum available for wireless systems. It has been demonstrated
that it can be used for future wireless systems as well as integrated into 4G/5G
wireless systems. Although there is a great amount of literature in the design of
cognitive radios from a system and networking point of view, there has been very
limited available literature detailing the circuit implementation of such systems.
Our textbook, Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit Design for Cognitive Radios, is
the first book to fill a disconnect in the literature between Cognitive Radio systems
and a detailed account of the circuit implementation and architectures required to
implement such systems. In addition, this book describes several novel concepts
that advance state-of-the-art cognitive radio systems.

The first question most readers of an O’Reilly book might ask is about the choice of the
cover animal. In this case, “why a duck?” Well, for the record, our first choice was a
unicorn decked out in glitter and a rainbow sash.
That response always gets a laugh (we are sure you just giggled a little), but it also brings
to the surface a common perception of software-defined networks among many expe‐
rienced network professionals. Although we think there is some truth to this perception,
there is certainly more meat than myth to this unicorn.

This book was born from the perception that there is much more to spectrum use
and sharing than one sees reflected in publications, whether academic, commercial
or political. the former – in good research style – tend towards reductionism and
concentrate on specific, detailed aspects. commercial publications tend to empha-
size the positive aspects and they tend to put promise above practice. Given the ever
increasing pace of technology development and recent successes of new wireless
technologies, some pundits predict large-scale spectrum scarcity, potentially lead-
ing to economic catastrophe. Although economic theory has a hard time explaining
recent events that shook the world economy, the notion of spectrum scarcity is intui-
tively acceptable, even if not correct or immediately relevant.

Spread-spectrum communication is a core area within the field of digital
communication. Originally used in military networks as countermeasures against
the threats of jamming and interception, spread-spectrum systems are now widely
used in commercial applications and are part of several wireless and mobile
communication standards. Although spread-spectrum communication is a staple
topic in textbooks on digital communication, its treatment is usually cursory. This
book is designed to provide a more intensive examination of the subject that is
suitable for graduate students and practicing engineers with a solid background
in the theory of digital communication. As the title indicates, this book stresses
principles rather than specific current or planned systems, which are described in
manyotherbooks. My goal in this bookis to providea concisebut lucidexplanation
of the fundamentals of spread-spectrum systems with an emphasis on theoretical
principles.

Although the origins of radio frequency based wireless networking can be
traced back to the University of Hawaii’s ALOHANET research project
in the 1970s, the key events that led to wireless networking becoming
one of the fastest growing technologies of the early 21st century have
been the ratification of the IEEE 802.11 standard in 1997, and the
subsequent development of interoperability certification by the Wi-Fi
Alliance (formerly WECA).

A few years ago I stood before an audience at a customer’s facility
explaining the merits of micromachining technology. The small
conference room was packed, and all ears were attentive. Everyone was
eager to learn about thismysteriousbuzzword, “MEMS.”Although many
in the audience were nodding in a sign of comprehension, the glazed
lookson their facesbetrayed them. Thisexperience isnot unique, but one
that isrepeated frequently in auditoriumsaround the world.

The purpose of this book is to present detailed fundamental information on a
global positioning system (GPS) receiver. Although GPS receivers are popu-
larly used in every-day life, their operation principles cannot be easily found
in one book. Most other types of receivers process the input signals to obtain
the necessary information easily, such as in amplitude modulation (AM) and
frequency modulation (FM) radios. In a GPS receiver the signal is processed
to obtain the required information, which in turn is used to calculate the user
position. Therefore, at least two areas of discipline, receiver technology and
navigation scheme, are employed in a GPS receiver. This book covers both
areas.
