Wireless penetration has witnessed explosive growth over the last two decades.
Accordingly, wireless devices have become much denser per unit Area, resulting
in an overcrowded usage of wireless resources. To avoid radio interferences and
packet collisions, wireless stations have to exchange control messages to coordinate
well. The existing wisdoms of conveying control messages could be classified into
three categories: explicit, implicit, or hybrid.

Employing multiple transmit and receive antennas, namely using multi-input multi-output
(MIMO) systems, has proven to be a major breakthrough in providing reliable wireless
communication links. Since their invention in the mid-1990s, transmit diversity, achieved
through space-time coding, and spatial multiplexing schemes have been the focus of much

This thesis is about wireless communication in shared radio spectrum. Its origin and
motivation is ideally represented by the two quotations from above. In this thesis, the
support of Quality-of-Service (QoS) in cognitive radio networks is analyzed. New
approaches to distributed coordination of cognitive radios are developed in different
spectrum sharing scenarios. The Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) 802.11 proto-
col of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) (IEEE, 2003) with
its enhancement for QoS support (IEEE, 2005d) is taken as basis. The Medium Access
Control (MAC) of 801.11(e) is modified to realize flexible and dynamic spectrum
assignment within a liberalized regulation framework.

When joining Siemens in 2001, I also extended my research interest towards radio net-
work planning methodologies. This Area of research brought together my personal interest
in mobile communications and in the design of efficient algorithms and data structures.
Between 2001 and 2003, I participated in the EU project Momentum, which was target-

The objective of this book is to allow the reader to predict the received
signal power produced by a particular radio transmitter. The first two
chapters examine propagation in free space for point-to-point and
point-to-Area transmission, respectively. This is combined with a dis-
cussion regarding the characteristics of antennas for various purposes. In
chapter 3, the effect of obstacles, whether buildings or mountains, is
discussed and analytical methods, whereby the strength of a signal is the
shadow of an obstacle can be predicted, are presented.

When we started thinking about writing the first edition of this book a few years ago, we had been
working together for more than five years on the borderline between propagation and signal processing.
Therefore, it is not surprising that this book deals with propagation models and design tools for MIMO
wireless communications. Yet, this book should constitute more than a simple combination of these
two domains. It hopefully conveys our integrated understanding of MIMO, which results from endless
controversial discussions on various multi-antenna related issues, as well as various interactions with
numerous colleagues. Obviously, this Area of technology is so large that it is beyond our aim to cover all
aspects in details. Rather, our goal is to provide researchers, R&D engineers and graduate students with
a comprehensive coverage of radio propagation models and space–time signal processing techniques
for multi-antenna, multi-user and multi-cell networks.

This books presents the research work of COST 273 Towards Mobile Broadband Multimedia
Networks, hence, it reports on the work performed and on the results achieved within the project
by its participants. The material presented here corresponds to the results obtained in four years
of collaborative work by more than 350 researchers from 137 institutions (universities, operators,
manufacturers, regulators, independent laboratories and others – a full list is provided in Appendix
B) belonging to 29 countries (mainly European, but also from Asia and North America) in the Area of
mobileradio. Theobjectiveofpublishingtheseresultsasabookisessentiallytomakethemavailable
to an audience wider than the project. In fact, it just follows a ‘tradition’ of previous COST Actions
in this Area of telecommunications, i.e. COST 207, 231 and 259.
