This book stems from its ancestor Digital Transmission Theory, published by Prentice-Hall in 1987 and now out of print. Following the suggestion of several colleagues who complained about the unavailability of a textbook they liked and adopted in their courses, laying a strong emphasis on wireless communication. We hope that those who liked the previous book will find again its flavor here, while new reader, untouched by nostalgia, will judge it favorably.

T his book covers basic communications theory and practical imple- mentation of transmitters and receivers. In so doing, I focus on dig- ital modulation, demodulation methods, probabilities, detection of digital signals, and spread spectrum system design and analysis. This book was written for those who want a good understanding of the basic prin- ciples of digital wireless communication systems, including spread spec- trum techniques. This book also provides a good intuitive and practical approach to digital communications. Therefore it is a valuable resource for anyoneinvolvedinwirelesscommunicationsandtransceiverdesignfordig- ital communications. The reader will gain a broad understanding of basic communication principles for transceiver design, digital communications, and spread spectrum, along with examples of many types of commercial and military data link systems.

In this book we focus on the basic signal processing that underlies current and future ultra wideband systems. By looking at signal processing in this way we hope this text will be useful even as UWB applications mature and change or regulations regarding ultra wideband systems are modified. The current UWB field is extremely dynamic, with new techniques and ideas being presented at every communications and signal-processing conference. The basic signal-processing techniques presented in this text though will not change for some time to come. Thus, we have taken a somewhat theoretical approach, which we believe is longer lasting and more useful to the reader in the long term than an up-to-the-minute summary that is out of date as soon as it is published.

n the first part of this book, we give an introduction to the basic applications of wireless com- munications, as well as the technical problems inherent in this communication paradigm. After a brief history of wireless, Chapter 1 describes the different types of wireless services, and works out their fundamental differences. The subsequent Section 1.3 looks at the same problem from a different angle: what data rates, ranges, etc., occur in practical systems, and especially, what combination of performance measures are demanded (e.g., what data rates need to be transmitted over short distances; what data rates are required over long distances?) Chapter 2 then describes the technical challenges of communicating without wires, putting special emphasis on fading and co-channel interference. Chapter 3 describes the most elementary problem of designing a wireless system, namely to set up a link budget in either a noise-limited or an interference-limited system. After studying this part of the book, the reader should have an overview of different types of wireless services, and understand the technical challenges involved in each of them. The solutions to those challenges are described in the later parts of this book.

Welcome to the third volume of the book entitled Technologies for the Wireless Future, which is produced by WWRF. The idea is to take the most important outputs from the working groups and special-interest groups that compose the Forum and bring them together in a series of one-volume surveys. The latest of these will give the reader a good overview of the WWRF approach to analyzing the future of wireless and mobile communications, as well as an insight into the trends themselves and the key technologies that will be deployed.

In modern societies, the production and trade of goods all around the world is constantly increasing. The latest technological achievements allow the mass-production of millions of items of every kind, which are being exchanged all around the globe with unprecedented rapidity. At the same time, the problem of identifying, classifying and tracking such a growing multitude of objects is con- sequently arising.

Sensors are points ofcontact betweenthe material world ofatoms, mass, andenergy and the seemingly immaterial world of information, computation, and cognition. Linking these two domains more tightly yields all sorts of practical benefits, such as improvedinputdevicesforcomputers, moreeffectivemedicaldevices(implantedor worn), more precise agricultural operations, better monitored buildings or bridges, more secure payment systems, and more reliable sensor–actuator control systems. There are many settings in which tighter coupling between digital and physical planes can enhance safety, security, performance, and reliability.

The next avatar of the Internet will revolutionize our world. In time, it will provide us a universal remote control, enabling us to monitor and control physical objects located anywhere on the planet, using a smart phone. It will make the universe around us programmable, allowing us to script the behav- ior of physical objects with electronic commands. This book is about such an emerging new version of the Internet.

With all the recent hype over radio frequency identification (RFID) and the requirements to implement it, you might think that RFID can turn water into wine, transform lead into gold, and cure the world’s diseases. You might also be worried that RFID will enable Big Brother to track your move- ments to within a foot of your location from a satellite five hundred miles up in space. The truth is, RFID can do none of these things. In this chapter, you find out the basics of what RFID is, what forces are dri- ving RFID as a replacement for the bar code in the marketplace, and what benefits RFID can offer
