The continuing explosive growth in mobile communication is demanding more spectrally
efficient radio access technologies than the prevalent second generation (2G) systems such as
GSM to handle just the voice traffic. We are already witnessing high levels of mobile
penetration exceeding 70% in some countries. It is anticipated that by 2010 more than half of
all communications will be carried out by mobile cellular networks. On the other hand, the
information revolution and changing life habits are bringing the requirement of commu-
nicating on a multimedia level to the mobile environment. But the data handling capabilities
and flexibility of the 2G cellular systems are limited.

The mature CMOS fabrication processes are available
in many IC foundries. It is cost-effective to leverage the
existing CMOS fabrication technologies to implement
MEMS devices. On the other hand, the MEMS devices
could also add values to the IC industry as the Moore’s law
reaching its limit. The CMOS MEMS could play a key role
to bridge the gap between the CMOS and MEMS
technologies. The CMOS MEMS also offers the advantage
of monolithic integration of ICs and micro mechanical
components.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) and Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are
the two key wireless technologies that have diversified applications in the present

In this book for the optimisation of assembly conveyor lines we are dealing with series part production
featured by a medium complexity degree and a medium number of individual components and assembly
technique alternatives. Modern production techniques for medium to large series products or mass
production usually involve assembly conveyor lines. They still use hand labour more or less automated.
The aim is to have monotonous and similar in type operations or such causing fatigue, stress and
production traumas, gradually replaced by automated assembly cycles, means and techniques. This
usually widely involves industrial robots and handlers. Higher productivity, lower cost and higher quality
of assembled products are usually required.

It all started rather innocuously. I walked into Dr GT Murthy’s office one fine day, andchanged my life. “Doc” was then the General Manager, Central R&D, of a very largeelectrical company headquartered in Bombay. In his new state-of-the-art electronics center,he had hand-picked some of India’s best engineers (over a hundred already) ever assembledunder one roof. Luckily, he too was originally a Physicist, and that certainly helped me gainsome empathy. Nowadays he is in retirement, but I will always remember him as athoroughly fair, honest and facts-oriented person, who led by example. There were severalthings I absorbed from him that are very much part of my basic engineering persona today.You can certainly look upon this book as an extension of what Doc started many years agoin India … because that’s what it really is! I certainly wouldn’t be here today if I hadn’t metDoc. And in fact, several of the brash, high-flying managers I’ve met in recent years,desperately need some sort of crash course in technology and human values from Doc!
