The concept of the Altera Nios II embedded processor implementation inside Field Programmable Gate Array [FPGA] of the CCD camera for the “Pi of the Sky” experiment is presented. The digital board of the CCD camera, its most important components, current implementation of firmware [VHDL] inside the FPGA and the role of external 8051 microcontroller is briefly described. The main goal of the presented work is to get rid of the external microcontroller and to design new system with Nios II processor built inside FPGA chip. Constraints for Implementing the design into the existing camera boards are discussed. New possibilities offered by a larger FPGA for next generation of cameras are considered.

Implementation of GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) that rendered triangle based models. Our goal was to generate complex models with a movable camera. We wanted to be able to render complex images that consisted of hundreds to thousands of triangles. We wanted to apply interpolated shading on the objects, so that they appeared more smooth and realisitc, and to have a camera that orbitted around the object, which allowed us to look arond the object with a stationary light source. We chose to do this in hardware, because our initial implementation using running software on the NIOS II processor was too slow. Implementing parallelism in hardware is also easier to do than in software, which allows for more efficiency. We used Professor Land s floating point hardware, which allowed us to do calculations efficiency, which is essential to graphics.

In this paper we revisit hybrid analog-digital precoding systems with emphasis on their modelling and radio-frequency (RF) losses, to realistically evaluate their benefits in 5G system implementations. For this, we decompose the analog beamforming networks (ABFN) as a bank of commonly used RF components and formulate realistic model constraints based on their S-parameters. Specifically, we concentrate on fully-connected ABFN (FC-ABFN) and Butler networks for Implementing the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) in the RF domain. The results presented in this paper reveal that the performance and energy efficiency of hybrid precoding systems are severely affected, once practical factors are considered in the overall design. In this context, we also show that Butler RF networks are capable of providing better performances than FC-ABFN for systems with a large number of RF chains.
