由于高重復頻率固體開關在加速器、雷達發射機、高功率微波和污染控制等領域存在的潛在優勢，美國、英國、日本和韓國等都對固體開關技術進行了大量研究，從而成為近年脈沖功率界研究的重點1。從固體元件電路結構上，固體開關可以分成兩種類型：串聯結構和累加器結構。采用串聯結構的固體開關生產廠家中，比較著名的有LLNL（LawrenCE Livermore National Laboratory）和DTI（Diverfisied Technology Inc.），采用累加器結構的廠家中，比較著名的是LLNIL.和美國的First Point Scientific Ine.B32A我們已經研制成功了采用光纖控制的10kV絕緣柵雙極型晶體管（Isolated Gate Bipolar Transistor，IGBT）固體開關，盡管在該固體開關中采用的光纖收發器比較便宜，但光纖控制部分還是比較昂貴的。在一定的應用環境，如脈沖寬度為幾微秒到十幾微秒，可以采用脈沖變壓器來控制IGBT。從文獻[1]表明：只要脈沖同步和緩沖電路設計適當，即可確保固體開關中不會出現過壓。盡管脈沖變壓器隔離控制在同步精度和驅動波形一致性方面不如光纖控制，但還是可以用來控制IGBT固體開關。采用脈沖變壓器控制IGBT的主要優點是價格便宜，但其存在的主要問題是輸出脈沖寬度范圍比較有限和絕緣性能如何保證的問題。在脈沖變壓器控制的IGBT固體開關中，脈沖變壓器設計非常重要，因此下面只討論脈沖變壓器的絕緣問題和IGBT固體開關的實驗結果。
