This book is an entry-level text on the technology of telecommunications. It has been crafted with the newcomer in mind. The twenty-one chapters of text have been prepared for high-school graduates who understand algebra, logarithms, and the basic principles of electricity such as Ohm’s law. However, it is appreciated that many readers require support in these areas. Appendices A and B review the essentials of electricity and MATHEMATICS up through logarithms. This material was placed in the appendices so as not to distract from the main theme, the technology of telecommunication systems. Another topic that many in the industry find difficult is the use of decibels and derived units. Appendix C provides the reader a basic understanding of decibels and their applications. Performance analysis belongs to the domain of applied MATHEMATICS. The major domain of application in this book concerns telecommunications sys- tems and networks. We will mainly use stochastic analysis and probability theory to address problems in the performance evaluation of telecommuni- cations systems and networks. The first chapter will provide a motivation and a statement of several problems.

In Helsinki during a visiting lecture, an internationally well-known professor in communica- tionssaid,‘Inthecommunicationssocietywehavemanagedtoconvertourproposalsandideas to real products, not like in the control engineering society. They have very nice papers and strong MATHEMATICS but most of the real systems still use the old PID controllers!’. As our background is mainly in control as well as communications engineering, we know that this thought is not very accurate. We agree that most of the practical controllers are analog and digital PID controllers, simply because they are very reliable and able to achieve the required control goals successfully. Most of the controllers can be explained in terms of PID. The reasons behind this impressive performance of PID will be explained in Chapter 2.

This introductory chapter is devoted to reviewing the fundamental ideas of control from a multivariable point of view. In some cases, the MATHEMATICS and operations on systems (modelling, pole placement, etc.), as previously treated in introductory courses and textbooks, convey to the readers an un- realistic image of systems engineering. The simplifying assumptions, simple examples and “perfect” model set-up usually used in these scenarios present the control problem as a pure mathematical problem, sometimes losing the physical meaning of the involved concepts and operations. We try to empha- sise the engineering implication of some of these concepts and, before entering into a detailed treatment of the different topics, a general qualitative overview is provided in this chapter.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a big field, and this is a big book. We have tried to explore the full breadth of the field, which encompasses logic, probability, and continuous MATHEMATICS; perception, reasoning, learning, and action; and everything from microelectronic devices to robotic planetary explorers. The book is also big because we go into some depth. The subtitle of this book is “A Modern Approach.” The intended meaning of this rather empty phrase is that we have tried to synthesize what is now known into a common frame- work, rather than trying to explain each subfield of AI in its own historical context. We apologize to those whose subfields are, as a result, less recognizable.
