JCommon is a Java class library that is used by JFreeChart, Pentaho Reporting and a few other projects. The library contains miscellaneous classes that support:

* a general logging framework
* text utilities
* user interface classes for displaying information about applications
* custom layout Managers
* a date chooser panel
* serialization utilities
JCommon is licensed under the terms of the GNU Lesser General Public Licence (LGPL) version 2.1 or later.

The term economics is generally understood to mean sound
management. This is associated with openness, good faith, accurate

In 2005, when the world crossed-over to Web 2.0, business professionals and Managers in
every industry – from traditional retail to high tech media and telecom – felt the first powerful
tremors of the strategic shifts taking place, sweeping away traditional business models and
altering competitive landscapes.
The serious study of the practice of how to determine the appropriate content of a
specification is a seldom-appreciated pastime. Those who have the responsibility to
design a product would prefer a greater degree of freedom than permitted by the con-
tent of a specification. Many of those who would manage those who would design
a product would prefer to allocate all of the project funding and schedule to what
they consider more productive labor. These are the attitudes, of course, that doom a
project to defeat but they are hard to counter no matter how many times repeated by
design engineers and Managers. A system engineer who has survived a few of these
experiences over a long career may retire and forget the past but we have an endur-
ing obligation to work toward changing these attitudes while trying to offer younger
system engineers a pathway toward a more sure success in requirements analysis and
specification publishing.
This book is an outgrowth of the pioneering development work done by InterDigital Com-
munication Corporation in 3rd Generation TDD WCDMA Technology. Many engineers
and Managers were involved in this development, which spanned a wide range of tech-
nology areas, including system architecture, radio interface, radio modem design, radio
resource management and hardware/software implementation. In addition, TDD WCDMA
technology had many direct and indirect contributors across the globe in the context of
the development of the 3GPP TDD WCDMA Standard.
HIS IS THE THIRD —and most likely the last—book
in the series on information technology for
energy Managers and web based energy infor-
mation and control systems. This book concentrates on
web based enterprise energy and building automation
systems, and serves as a capstone volume in this series.
The thrust here is that the highest level functions of a
building and facility automation system are provided
by a web based EIS/ECS system that provides energy
management, maintenance management, overall facility
operational management, and ties in with the enterprise
resource management system for the entire facility or
the group of facilities being managed. If there were ever
to be a fourth volume in this series, it would follow
the logical progression of the first three volumes, and
would probably be titled Web Based Enterprise Resource
Management Systems.
LIKE SO MANY OTHERS , THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN BECAUSE WE COULDN ’ T FIND ONE LIKE IT . We
needed something to hand to all of those people who have come to us asking for “a good
book to read on RFID.” When we looked for candidates we found some great books, but
most were aimed at electrical engineers or top-level Managers, with very little for those of
us who are in between. This book is for developers, system and software architects, and
project Managers, as well as students and professionals in all of the industries impacted by
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) who want to understand how this technology
works. As the title suggests, this book is about RFID in general and not just the most
recent developments; however, because so much is going on in the area of RFID for the
supply chain and especially the Electronic Product Code (EPC), we have devoted consider-
able space to these topics. Regardless of the type of RFID work you may be doing, we
think you will find something useful here.
It all started rather innocuously. I walked into Dr GT Murthy’s office one fine day, andchanged my life. “Doc” was then the General Manager, Central R&D, of a very largeelectrical company headquartered in Bombay. In his new state-of-the-art electronics center,he had hand-picked some of India’s best engineers (over a hundred already) ever assembledunder one roof. Luckily, he too was originally a Physicist, and that certainly helped me gainsome empathy. Nowadays he is in retirement, but I will always remember him as athoroughly fair, honest and facts-oriented person, who led by example. There were severalthings I absorbed from him that are very much part of my basic engineering persona today.You can certainly look upon this book as an extension of what Doc started many years agoin India … because that’s what it really is! I certainly wouldn’t be here today if I hadn’t metDoc. And in fact, several of the brash, high-flying Managers I’ve met in recent years,desperately need some sort of crash course in technology and human values from Doc!
