The first Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) networks were launched during 2002. By the end of 2005 there were 100 open WCDMA networks and a total of over 150 operators having frequency licenses for WCDMA operation. Currently, the WCDMA networks are deployedinUniversalMobileTelecommunicationsSystem(UMTS)bandaround2GHz in Europe and Asia including Japan and Korea. WCDMA in America is deployed in the existing 850 and 1900 spectrum allocations while the new 3G band at 1700/2100 is expected to be available in the near future. 3GPP has defined the WCDMA operation also for several additional bands, which are expected to be taken into use during the coming years.

We were on the lookout for ice. I was in a 32 foot sailing yacht with writer and explorer Tristan Gooley, undertaking a double-handed sail from Scotland through the Faroes up to 66 33 45.7 N and the midnight sun. Now sailing out of the Arctic Circle we were approaching Iceland from the north, heading for the Denmark Straits, where ice flowed south. The Admiralty Pilot warned of bergs but the ice charts we had sailed with were over a week old. We needed an update.

GaN is an already well implanted semiconductor technology, widely diffused in the LED optoelectronics industry. For about 10 years, GaN devices have also been developed for RF wireless applications where they can replace Silicon transistors in some selected systems. That incursion in the RF field has open the door to the power switching capability in the lower frequency range and thus to the power electronic applications. Compared to Silicon, GaN exhibits largely better figures for most of the key specifications: Electric field, energy gap, electron mobility and melting point. Intrinsically, GaN could offer better performance than Silicon in terms of: breakdown voltage, switching frequency and Overall systems efficiency.

Since OpenStreetMap (OSM) appeared more than ten years ago, new collaborative mapping approaches have emerged in different areas and have become important components of localised information and services based on localisation. There is now increased awareness of the importance of the space-time attributes of almost every event and phenomenon. Citizens now have endless possibilities to quickly geographically locate themselves with an accuracy previously thought impossible. Based on these societal drivers, we proposed a number of collaborative mapping experiments (“mapping parties”) to delegates of a large open-source geospatial conference and to citizens of the conference’s host city during July 2015.
