The telecommunications industry has seen a rapid boost within the last decade. New realities
and visions of functionalities in various telecommunications networks have brought forward the
concept of next-generation networks (NGNs). The competitions among Operators for support-
ing various services, lowering of the cost of having mobile and cellular phones and smartphones,
increasing demand for general mobility, explosion of digital traffic, and advent of convergence
network technologies added more dynamism in the idea of NGNs. In fact, facilitating con-
vergence of networks and convergence of various types of services is a significant objective of
NGN

Mobile communication has gained significant importance in today’s society. As
of 2010, the number of mobile phone subscribers has surpassed 5 billion [ABI10],
and the global annual mobile revenue is soon expected to top $1 trillion [Inf10].
While these numbers appear promising for mobile Operators at first sight, the
major game-changer that has come up recently is the fact that the market is

indoors. However, some surveys show that many households and businesses experience
a poor indoor coverage problem. It has been identified that poor coverage is the main
reason for churn, which is very costly for Operators in saturated markets. How to provide

The first Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Wideband Code Division
Multiple Access (WCDMA) networks were launched during 2002. By the end of 2005
there were 100 open WCDMA networks and a total of over 150 Operators having
frequency licenses for WCDMA operation. Currently, the WCDMA networks are
deployedinUniversalMobileTelecommunicationsSystem(UMTS)bandaround2GHz
in Europe and Asia including Japan and Korea. WCDMA in America is deployed in the
existing 850 and 1900 spectrum allocations while the new 3G band at 1700/2100 is
expected to be available in the near future. 3GPP has defined the WCDMA operation
also for several additional bands, which are expected to be taken into use during the
coming years.

Microwave radio network design is a subset of activities that constitute
the overall transmission network design. Transmission networks are
sometimes called transport networks, access networks, or connectivity
networks. For many wireless carriers, microwave is becoming a popu-
lar preference over wireline (leased lines) transport for many reasons,
especially as microwave radio equipment costs decrease and installation
becomes simpler. Low monthly operating costs can undercut those of
typical single (and especially multiple) T1/E1 expenses, proving it to be
more economical over the long term—usually two to four years. Network
Operators also like the fact that they can own and control microwave
radio networks instead of relying on other service providers for network
components.

This books presents the research work of COST 273 Towards Mobile Broadband Multimedia
Networks, hence, it reports on the work performed and on the results achieved within the project
by its participants. The material presented here corresponds to the results obtained in four years
of collaborative work by more than 350 researchers from 137 institutions (universities, Operators,
manufacturers, regulators, independent laboratories and others – a full list is provided in Appendix
B) belonging to 29 countries (mainly European, but also from Asia and North America) in the area of
mobileradio. Theobjectiveofpublishingtheseresultsasabookisessentiallytomakethemavailable
to an audience wider than the project. In fact, it just follows a ‘tradition’ of previous COST Actions
in this area of telecommunications, i.e. COST 207, 231 and 259.

Mobile wireless communications are in constant evolution due to the continu-
ously increasing requirements and expectations of both users and Operators.
Mass multimedia* services have been for a long time expected to generate a large
amount of data traffic in future wireless networks [1]. Mass multimedia services
are, by definition, purposed for many people. In general, it can be distinguished
between the distribution of any popular content over a wide area and the distribu-
tion of location-dependent information in highly populated areas. Representative
examples include the delivery of live video streaming content (like sports compe-
titions, concerts, or news) and file download (multimedia clips, digital newspa-
pers, or software updates).
