A major societal challenge for the decades to come will be the delivery of effective medical services while at the same time curbing the growing cost of healthcare. It is expected that new concepts-particularly electronically assisted healthcare will provide an answer. This will include new devices, new medical services as well as networking. On the device side, impressive innovation has been made Possible by micro- and nanoelectronics or CMOS Integrated Circuits. Even higher accuracy and smaller form factor combined with reduced cost and increased convenience of use are enabled by incorporation of CMOS IC design in the realization of biomedical systems. The compact hearing aid devices and current pacemakers are good examples of how CMOS ICs bring about these new functionalities and services in the medical field. Apart from these existing applications, many researchers are trying to develop new bio-medical solutions such as Artificial Retina, Deep Brain Stimulation, and Wearable Healthcare Systems. These are Possible by combining the recent advances of bio-medical technology with low power CMOS IC technology.

A decade ago, I first wrote that people moved, and networks needed to adapt to the reality that people worked on the go. Of course, in those days, wireless LANs came with a trade-off. Yes, you could use them while moving, but you had to trade a great deal of throughput to get the mobility. Although it was Possible to get bits anywhere, even while in motion, those bits came slower. As one of the network engineers I worked with put it, “We’ve installed switched gigabit Ethernet everywhere on campus, so I don’t understand why you’d want to go back to what is a 25-megabit hub.” He un- derestimated the allure of working on the go.

Communication between various devices makes it Possible to pro- vide unique and innovative services. Although this interdevice com- munication is a very powerful mechanism, it is also a complex and clumsy mechanism, leading to a lot of complexity in present day systems. This not only makes networking difficult but also limits its flexibility.

While teaching classes on digital transmission and mobile communications for undergraduate and graduate students, I was wondering if it would be Possible to write a book capable of giving them some insight about the practical meaning of the concepts, beyond the mathematics; the same insight that experience and repetitive contact with the subject are capable to construct; the insight that is capable of build- ing the bridge between the theory and how the theory manifests itself in practice.

The design and manufacturing of wireless radio frequency (RF) transceivers has developed rapidly in recent ten yeas due to rapid development of RF integrated circuits and the evolution of high-speed digital signal processors (DSP). Such high speed signal processors, in conjunction with the development of high resolution analog to digital converters and digital to analog converters, has made it Possible for RF designers to digitize higher intermediate frequencies, thus reducing the RF section and enhancing the overall performance of the RF section.

The General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) allows an end user to send and receive data in packet transfer mode within a public land mobile network (PLMN) without using a permanent connection between the mobile station (MS) and the external network during data transfer. This way, GPRS opti- mizes the use of network and radio resources (RRs) since, unlike circuit- switched mode, no connection between the MS and the external network is established when there is no data flow in progress. Thus, this RR optimiza- tion makes it Possible for the operator to offer more attractive fees.

In the nineteenth century, scientists, mathematician, engineers and innovators started investigating electromagnetism. The theory that underpins wireless communications was formed by Maxwell. Early demonstrations took place by Hertz, Tesla and others. Marconi demonstrated the first wireless transmission. Since then, the range of applications has expanded at an immense rate, together with the underpinning technology. The rate of development has been incredible and today the level of technical and commercial maturity is very high. This success would not have been Possible without understanding radio- wave propagation. This knowledge enables us to design successful systems and networks, together with waveforms, antennal and transceiver architectures. The radio channel is the cornerstone to the operation of any wireless system.

Do you have a mobile phone? We think you probably do, one way or another. We would also guess that you might use it for many diff erent things in the course of your everyday life—as a telephone certainly, but also as an address book, as a clock or watch, as a camera, or now as a connection to your computer, email and the internet. Th ere will be a range of people you use it to contact (or not), and various strategies you use to take calls—or send texts, or take photos, or receive emails, or search online (or not, in diff erent situations). Th ere are also likely to be a range of social relation- ships in your life that your mobile phone helps to maintain—or disrupts, or inter- venes in, or makes Possible, or complicates, or just plain helps to handle.

Intensive development of digital technologies coincided in time with the beginning of the new era in telecommunications. It made Possible to formalize many proce- dures of data exchange and to atomize some operations which made providing of serviceandmakeworkofmanytelecommunicationworkersmucheasier. Somenew telecommunication technologies were born out of the necessity for use of specific configurations of network elements and networks, as well as for a possibility of providing maximum characteristics of efficiency combined with high requirements to the stability of operation, the overcoming of different catastrophic situations and deadlockconditions, such as failuresand ”pending”of the networkandthe like. The thresholdbetweeninformationsystems andtelecommunicationsystems has become practically invisible. It resulted in such a new term as ”infocommunication”
