This book is intended for RF planners, to serve as a practical tool in their daily work
designing indoor radio distribution systems.
Based on feedback from readers of the first edition it was clear to me that I needed to add
more material and in depth description of the basics of indoor systems based on using
repeaters; this has grown into a new Section 4.7.
There was also a strong demand to add more detail and dedicate a full chapter to radio
planning in tunnels, for both rail and road tunnels; and redundancy principles in the design
focus for solving the challenge of handover zones. An entire Chapter 11 is now dedicated to
tunnel radio planning.

In this book, we study the interference cancellation and detection problem in
multiantenna multi-user scenario using precoders. The goal is to utilize multiple
antennas to cancel the interference without sacrificing the diversity or the com-
plexity of the system.

This book is about multipoint cooperative communication, a key technology to
overcome the long-standing problem of limited transmission rate caused by inter-
point interference. However, the multipoint cooperative communication is not an
isolated technology. Instead, it covers a vast range of research areas such as the
multiple-input multiple-outputsystem, the relay network, channel state information
issues, inter-point radio resource management operations, coordinated or joint
transmissions, etc. We suppose that any attempt trying to thoroughly analyze the
multipoint cooperative communication technology might end up working on a
cyclopedia for modern communication systems and easily get lost in discussing all
kinds of cooperative communication schemes as well as the associated models and
their variations.

Modeling and simulation of nonlinear systems provide communication system designers
with a tool to predict and verify overall system performance under nonlinearity and
complex communication signals. Traditionally, RF system designers use deterministic
signals (discrete tones), which can be implemented in circuit simulators, to predict the
performance of their nonlinear circuits/systems. However, RF system designers are usually
faced with the problem of predicting system performance when the input to the system
is real-world communication signals which have a random nature.

Theartofcomputationofelectromagnetic(EM)problemshasgrownexponentially
for three decades due to the availability of powerful computer resources. In spite of
this, the EM community has suffered without a suitable text on the computational
techniques commonly used in solving EM-related problems. Although there have
been monographs on one particular technique or another, the monographs are written
for the experts rather than students. Only a few texts cover the major techniques and

with one or a few techniques but not many seem to be familiar with all the common
techniques. This text attempts to fill that gap.

The roots of this book were planted about a decade ago. At that time, I became
increasingly convinced that wide-area and metropolitan-area networks, where much
of my group’s research has been centered at that time, were in good shape. Although
research in these fields was (and still is) needed, that’s not where the networking
bottleneck seemed to be. Rather, the bottleneck was (and still is in many places) in
the access networks, which choked users’ access to information and services. It was
clear to me that the long-term solution to that problem has to involve optical fiber
access networks.

Radio frequency spectrum is a scarce and critical natural resource that is utilized for
many services including surveillance, navigation, communication, and broadcast-
ing. Recent years have seen tremendous growth in the use of spectrum especially by
commercial cellular operators. Ubiquitous use of smartphones and tablets is one
of the reasons behind an all-time high utilization of spectrum. As a result, cellular
operators are experiencing a shortage of radio spectrum to meet bandwidth
demands of users. On the other hand, spectrum measurements have shown that
much spectrum not held by cellular operators is underutilized even in dense urban
areas. This has motivated shared access to spectrum by secondary systems with no
or minimal impact on incumbent systems. Spectrum sharing is a promising
approach to solve the problem of spectrum congestion as it allows cellular operators
access to more spectrum in order to satisfy the ever-growing bandwidth demands of
commercial users.

n the first part of this book, we give an introduction to the basic applications of wireless com-
munications, as well as the technical problems inherent in this communication paradigm. After a
brief history of wireless, Chapter 1 describes the different types of wireless services, and works
out their fundamental differences. The subsequent Section 1.3 looks at the same problem from
a different angle: what data rates, ranges, etc., occur in practical systems, and especially, what
combination of performance measures are demanded (e.g., what data rates need to be transmitted
over short distances; what data rates are required over long distances?) Chapter 2 then describes
the technical challenges of communicating without wires, putting special emphasis on fading and
co-channel interference. Chapter 3 describes the most elementary problem of designing a wireless
system, namely to set up a link budget in either a noise-limited or an interference-limited system.
After studying this part of the book, the reader should have an overview of different types of
wireless services, and understand the technical challenges involved in each of them. The solutions
to those challenges are described in the later parts of this book.

Since electronic equipment was first developed, static electricity has been a
source of problems for users and designers. In the last few years, however,
electrostatic discharge (ESD) has become a source of major problems. This
has occurred because newer electronic devices, such as integrated circuits,
are much more susceptible to ESD problems than previous devices, such as
vacuum tubes. Another trend compounding this ESD susceptibility problem
is the spread of sophisticated equipment into home and office environments
where ESD is quite common.

Resource allocation is an important issue in wireless communication networks. In
recent decades, cognitive radio technology and cognitive radio-based networks have
obtained more and more attention and have been well studied to improve spectrum
utilization and to overcomethe problem of spectrum scarcity in future wireless com-
munication systems. Many new challenges on resource allocation appear in cogni-
tive radio-based networks. In this book, we focus on effective solutions to resource
allocation in several important cognitive radio-based networks, including a cogni-
tive radio-basedopportunisticspectrum access network, a cognitiveradio-basedcen-
tralized network, a cognitive radio-based cellular network, a cognitive radio-based
high-speed vehicle network, and a cognitive radio-based smart grid.
