Power Electronics is one of modern and key technologies in Electrical and Electronics Engineering for green power, sustainable energy systems, and smart grids. Especially, the transformation of existing electric power systems into smart grids is currently a global trend. Sound is simply an airborne version of vibration. The air which carries sound is a mixture of gases. In gases, the molecules contain so much energy that they break free from their neighbors and rush around at high speed. As Figure 1.1(a) shows, the innumerable elastic collisions of these high-speed molecules produce pressure on the walls of any gas container. If left undisturbed in a container at a constant temperature, eventually the pressure throughout would be constant and uniform.

The present work, Advanced Process Engineering Control, is intended to be the continuation of the authors? Basic Process Engineering Control published by DeGruyter in 2014. It presents the main and conventional type control loops in process industries. Titles containing the concept of process engineering were deliberately chosen to suggest the inclusion, within the same approach, of processes other than the traditional ones. My association with the theory of controls in continuous time started during my studies at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India, in 1974 as an undergraduate student in the Controls and Power program. The initial introduction by Professors Kesavamurthy, Y. P. Singh, and Rajagopalan laid the foundation for a good basic understanding of the subject matter. This pursuit and further advanced study in the field of digital controls continued during my days as a graduate student in the Electrical and Systems Engineering Department at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, from 1983 to 1988.

Striking developments have taken place since 1980 in feedback control theory. The subject has be- come both more rigorous and more applicable. The rigor is not for its own sake, but rather that even in an engineering discipline rigor can lead to clarity and to methodical solutions to problems.
