GiPS是一個面向數據密集型應用的分布式文件系統，整個系統由Master節點、數據節點和客戶端組成，具有一定的容錯性和可擴展性。系統的通信使用了中間件平臺ICE，并使用C++語言進行開發實現。GiPS具備了文件系統的基本功能，實現了對數據的流式讀寫操作，并有一定的容錯功能。
