This book is intended for RF planners, to SERVE as a practical tool in their daily work
designing indoor radio distribution systems.
Based on feedback from readers of the first edition it was clear to me that I needed to add
more material and in depth description of the basics of indoor systems based on using
repeaters; this has grown into a new Section 4.7.
There was also a strong demand to add more detail and dedicate a full chapter to radio
planning in tunnels, for both rail and road tunnels; and redundancy principles in the design
focus for solving the challenge of handover zones. An entire Chapter 11 is now dedicated to
tunnel radio planning.
This book is intended for the RF planners, to SERVE as a practical tool in their daily work
designing indoor radio distribution systems. It is not a complete book about all the deep
aspects and corners of GSM, DCS, UMTS and HSPA networks, or all the core network
systems. It is dedicated to the last 10–70 m of the network, the indoor air interface between
the mobile user and the indoor mobile network.
Mobile radio networks have risen in prominence over the last few years, primarily by the rise
in popularity of cellular phones. It is important to recognise however that mobile radio
technology fulfils a far wider range of applications that meet the demands of the modern
world. These include the networks that allow police and emergency services to SERVE the
public, military networks for operations and humanitarian support, and the mobile technol-
ogies that are vital to the safety of aircraft.
Wireless communications and networking technology are advancing at a very rapid
pace. Newer technologies and standards are evolving to SERVE the ever-increasing num-
ber of users demanding different types of mobile applications and services. Research
and development activities on wireless technology constitute one of the most impor-
tant segments of research and development in the telecommunications area today.
An understanding of the policies, regulations, standards and techniques of radio spectrum
management is useful to those who manage and administrate it, to operators, to equipment
providers and to the users of wireless communication (i.e., all of us). For many years the author
has been deeply involved in ruling the RF spectrum at the national, regional and global levels.
The book is based on the professional experience of the author, his academic courses, presenta-
tions and tutorials in five continents. The book reflects this legacy and will be of use to engineers,
lawyers and economists, who SERVE the global industry of the wireless world; in it they may find
solutions to the problems they frequently encounter.
With the rapid development of electric vehicles (EVs) as well as the promotion and
application of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies, EVs charging loads, as flexible
loads, have the potential to participate in the grid services, including peak shaving
and valley filling, frequency regulation (FR), emergency power, energy market
