The philosophy of the book is to present various pattern recognition tasks in a unified way, including image analysis, speech processing, and communication applications. Despite their differences, these areas do share common features and their study can only benefit from a unified approach.

A certification path is an ordered list of certificates starting with a certificate issued by the relying party s trust root, and ending with the target certificate that needs to be validated. Certification path validation procedures are based on the algorithm supplied in ITU-T Recommendation X.509 and further defined in Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Request for Comments (RFC) 3280. Certification path processing verifies the binding between the subject distinguished name and/or subject alternative name and the subject public key defined in the target certificate. The binding is limited by constraints, which are specified in the certificates that comprise the path, and inputs that are specified by the relying party. To ensure secure interoperation of PKI-enabled applications, the path validation must be done in accordance with the X.509 and RFC 3280 specifications. This document provides the test assertions and the test cases for testing path validation software against these specifications.

LUFA (Lightweight USB Framework for AVRs) is my first foray into the world of USB. Originally based on the AT90USBKEY from Atmel, it is an open-source, driver for the USB-enabled AT90USBXXX AVR microcontroller series, released under the permissive MIT License (see documentation or project source for full license details). Currently, the AT90USB1286, AT90USB1287, AT90USB646, AT90USB647, AT90USB162, AT90USB82, ATMEGA16U4 and ATMEGA32U4 AVR microcontrollers are supported by the library. Supported boards are the USBKEY, STK525, STK526, ATAVRUSBRF01 and the RZUSBSTICK.

Commercially available active noise control headphones rely on fixed analog controllers to drive "anti-noise" loudspeakers. Our design uses an adaptive controller to optimally cancel unwanted acoustic noise. This headphone would be particularly useful for workers who operate or work near heavy machinery and engines because the noise is selectively eliminated. Desired sounds, such as speech and warning signals, are left to be heard clearly. The adaptive control algorithm is implemented on a Texas Instruments (TI™ ) 1 TMS320C30GEL digital signal processor (DSP), which drives a Sony CD550 headphone/microphone system. Our experiments indicate that adaptive noise control results in a dramatic improvement in performance over fixed noise control. This improvement is due to the availability of high-performance programmable DSPs and the self-optimizing and tracking capabilities of the adaptive controller in response to the surrounding noise.

This report presents a tutorial of fundamental array processing and beamforming theory relevant to microphone array speech processing. A microphone array consists of multiple microphones placed at different spatial locations. Built upon a knowledge of sound propagation principles, the multiple inputs can be manipulated to enhance or attenuate signals emanating from particular directions. In this way, microphone arrays provide a means of enhancing a desired signal in the presence of corrupting noise sources. Moreover, this enhancement is based purely on knowledge of the source location, and so microphone array techniques are applicable to a wide variety of noise types. Microphone arrays have great potential in practical applications of speech processing, due to their ability to provide both noise robustness and hands-free signal acquisition.

A major societal challenge for the decades to come will be the delivery of effective medical services while at the same time curbing the growing cost of healthcare. It is expected that new concepts-particularly electronically assisted healthcare will provide an answer. This will include new devices, new medical services as well as networking. On the device side, impressive innovation has been made possible by micro- and nanoelectronics or CMOS Integrated Circuits. Even higher accuracy and smaller form factor combined with reduced cost and increased convenience of use are enabled by incorporation of CMOS IC design in the realization of biomedical systems. The compact hearing aid devices and current pacemakers are good examples of how CMOS ICs bring about these new functionalities and services in the medical field. Apart from these existing applications, many researchers are trying to develop new bio-medical solutions such as Artificial Retina, Deep Brain Stimulation, and Wearable Healthcare Systems. These are possible by combining the recent advances of bio-medical technology with low power CMOS IC technology.
