In recent years, cellular voice networks have transformed into powerful packet-switched
access networks for both voice communication and Internet access. Evolving Universal
Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) networks and first Long Term Evolution
(LTE) installations now deliver bandwidths of several megabits per second to individual
users, and mobile access to the Internet from handheld devices and notebooks is no
longer perceived as slower than a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) or cable connection.
Bandwidth and capacity demands, however, keep rising because of the increasing number
of people using the networks and because of bandwidth-intensive applications such as
video streaming. Thus, network manufacturers and network operators need to find ways
to continuously increase the capacity and performance of their cellular networks while
reducing the cost.

From the transition of analog to digital communication along with seamless mobility and
high computing power of small handheld devices, the wireless communications industry has
seen tremendous changes leading to the integration of several Telecommunication networks,
devices and services over last 30 years. The rate of this progress and growth has increased
particularly in the past decade because people no longer use their devices and networks for
voice only, but demand bundle contents such as data download/streaming, HDTV, HD video ,
3D video conferencing with higher efficiency, seamless connectivity, intelligence, reliability
and better user experience. Although the challenges facing service providers and
Telecommunication companies differ by product, region, market size, and their areas of
concentration but time to market, efficient utilization of their assets and revenue expansion,
have impacted significantly how to manage and conduct their business while maintaining
sufficient margin.

Over the past few decades, wireless communications and networking have witnessed an
unprecedented growth, and have become pervasive much sooner than anyone could have
predicted. For example, cellular wireless networks are expected to become the dominant
and ubiquitous Telecommunication means in the next few decades. The widespread
success of cellular and WLAN systems prompts the development of advanced wireless

It is commonly accepted today that optical fiber communications have revolutionized
Telecommunications. Indeed, dramatic changes have been induced in the way we interact
with our relatives, friends, and colleagues: we retrieve information, we entertain and
educate ourselves, we buy and sell, we organize our activities, and so on, in a long list
of activities. Optical fiber systems initially allowed for a significant curb in the cost of
transmission and later on they sparked the process of a major rethinking regarding some,
generation-old, Telecommunication concepts like the (OSI)-layer definition, the lack of
cross-layer dependency, the oversegmentation and overfragmentation of telecommunica-
tions networks, and so on.

Wireless technologies like GSM, UMTS, LTE, Wireless LAN and Bluetooth have
revolutionized the way we communicate by making services like telephony and Internet
access available anytime and from almost anywhere. Today, a great variety of technical
publications offer background information about these technologies but they all fall
short in one way or another. Books covering these technologies usually describe only
one of the systems in detail and are generally too complex as a first introduction. The
Internet is also a good source, but the articles one finds are usually too short and super-
ficial or only deal with a specific mechanism of one of the systems. For this reason, it
was difficult for me to recommend a single publication to students in my Telecommunication
classes, which I have been teaching in addition to my work in the wireless Telecommunication
industry. This book aims to change this.

This book is an entry-level text on the technology of Telecommunications. It has been
crafted with the newcomer in mind. The twenty-one chapters of text have been prepared
for high-school graduates who understand algebra, logarithms, and the basic principles of
electricity such as Ohm’s law. However, it is appreciated that many readers require support
in these areas. Appendices A and B review the essentials of electricity and mathematics
up through logarithms. This material was placed in the appendices so as not to distract
from the main theme, the technology of Telecommunication systems. Another topic that
many in the industry find difficult is the use of decibels and derived units. Appendix C
provides the reader a basic understanding of decibels and their applications. The only
mathematics necessary is an understanding of the powers of ten
