One of the predominant topics in the domain of the emerging Smart Grid can be seen in standardization. With the combination of existing protection and automa- tion technology with upcoming ICT-based solutions, different interoperability is- sues arise WHEN technologies have to be combined in the infrastructure. Standards have proven to be one of the most striking solutions to actually cope with this topic. Since 2008, this topic has gained much attention in various political and technical agendas.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is witnessing a recent explosion of development in both industry and academia. A number of applications include supply chain management, electronic payments, RFID passports, environmental monitoring and control, office access control, intelligent labels, target detection and tracking, port management, food production control, animal identification, and so on. RFID is also an indispensable foundation to realize the pervasive computing paradigm—“Internet of things.” It is strongly believed that many more scenarios will be identified WHEN the principles of RFID are thoroughly understood, cheap components available, and WHEN RFID security is guaranteed.

LIKE SO MANY OTHERS , THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN BECAUSE WE COULDN ’ T FIND ONE LIKE IT . We needed something to hand to all of those people who have come to us asking for “a good book to read on RFID.” WHEN we looked for candidates we found some great books, but most were aimed at electrical engineers or top-level managers, with very little for those of us who are in between. This book is for developers, system and software architects, and project managers, as well as students and professionals in all of the industries impacted by Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) who want to understand how this technology works. As the title suggests, this book is about RFID in general and not just the most recent developments; however, because so much is going on in the area of RFID for the supply chain and especially the Electronic Product Code (EPC), we have devoted consider- able space to these topics. Regardless of the type of RFID work you may be doing, we think you will find something useful here.

To a quantum mechanic the whole universe is one godawful big interacting wavefunction ? but to the rest of us, it’s a world full of separate and distinguishable objects that hurt us WHEN we kick them. At a few months of age, human children recognize objects, expect them to be permanent and move continuously, and display surprise WHEN they aren’t or don’t. We associate visual, tactile, and in some cases audible and olfactory sensations with identifiable physical things. We’re hardwired to understand our environment as being composed of separable things with specific properties and locations. We understand the world in terms of what was where WHEN.

Fun. We (your authors) wanted a word to describe our ultimate goal for this book, as well as a word we hope you (our reader) will use to describe it, and that’s the one we chose. There are others goals, of course, but in the end, WHEN you’ve finished the book, we’re hoping you’ll have enjoyed the activities described in these pages. Many books use the Introduction to explain exactly what the book is about, what the reader will learn, what the reader needs (a skill or maybe an item or piece of software), and what the reader will be left with WHEN that last page is completed. And this Introduction will do those things, but … hopefully it’ll make you excited to get started.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has undoubtedly been one of the most important buz- zwords over the past years. The goal in AI is to design algorithms that transform com- puters into “intelligent” agents. By intelligence here we do not necessarily mean an extraordinary level of smartness shown by superhuman; it rather often involves very basic problems that humans solve very frequently in their day-to-day life. This can be as simple as recognizing faces in an image, driving a car, playing a board game, or reading (and understanding) an article in a newspaper. The intelligent behaviour ex- hibited by humans WHEN “reading” is one of the main goals for a subfield of AI called Natural Language Processing (NLP). Natural language 1 is one of the most complex tools used by humans for a wide range of reasons, for instance to communicate with others, to express thoughts, feelings and ideas, to ask questions, or to give instruc- tions. Therefore, it is crucial for computers to possess the ability to use the same tool in order to effectively interact with humans.

The PW4554 is a cost-effective, fully integrated high input voltage single-cell Li-ion battery charger. The charger uses a CC/CV charge profile required by Li-ion battery. The charger accepts an inputvoltage up to 24V but is disabled WHEN the input voltage exceeds the OVP threshold, typically 6.8V,to prevent excessive power dissipation. The 24V rating eliminates the over-voltage protection circuitrequired in a low input voltage charger

The PW4055 is a complete constant-current /constant-voltage linear charger for single cell lithiumion batteries. Its ThinSOT package and low external component count make the PW4055 ideallysuited for portable applications.Furthermore, the PW4055 is specifically designed to work within USBpower specifications. The PW4055 No external sense resistor is needed, and no blocking diode is required due to theinternal MOSFET architecture.Thermal feedback regulates the charge current to limit the dietemperature during high power operation or high ambient temperature. The charge voltage is fixedat 4.2V, and the charge current can be programmed externally with a single resistor. The PW4055automatically terminates the charge cycle WHEN the charge current drops to 1/10th the programmedvalue after the final float voltage is reached. WHEN the input supply (wall adapter or USB supply) isremoved, the PW4055 automatically enters a low current state, dropping the battery drain currentto less than 2μA. The PW4055 can be put into shutdown mode, reducing the supply current to 25μA.The BAT pin has a 7KV ESD(HBM) capability. Other features include charge current monitor, undervoltage lockout, automatic recharge and a status pin to indicate charge termination and the presenceof an input voltage

The PW2601 is a charger front-end integrated circuit designed to provide protection to Li-ionbatteries from failures of charging circuitry. The device monitors the input voltage, battery voltageand the charging current to make sure all three parameters are operated in normal range. Thedevice will switch off internal MOSFET to disconnect IN to OUT to protect load WHEN any of inputvoltage, output current exceeds the threshold. The Over temperature protection (OTP) functionmonitors chip temperature to protect the device. The PW2601 also can protect the system’sbattery from being over charged by monitors the battery voltage continuously. The deviceoperates like a linear regulator, maintaining a 5.1V output with input voltages up to the input overvoltage threshold. The PW2601 is available in DFN-2x2-8L package. Standard products are Pb-free and Halogenfree
