In the past few decades, a technological revolution has occurred that has changed
the way we live in dramatic ways. This technological revolution is the result of
the emergence and evolution of a WIDE variety of new wireless networking tech-
nologies. Now people using these technologies are able to access the network and
control many applications at will with their handheld devices anywhere, anytime.
Although these technologies have made a long lasting impact in the revolution, it
has also opened up various challenging issues which are yet to be resolved to make
them more efficient and cost-effective.

The roots of this book were planted about a decade ago. At that time, I became
increasingly convinced that WIDE-area and metropolitan-area networks, where much
of my group’s research has been centered at that time, were in good shape. Although
research in these fields was (and still is) needed, that’s not where the networking
bottleneck seemed to be. Rather, the bottleneck was (and still is in many places) in
the access networks, which choked users’ access to information and services. It was
clear to me that the long-term solution to that problem has to involve optical fiber
access networks.

Communication protocols – for short protocols – form the basis for the opera-
tion of computer networks and telecommunication systems. They are behavior
conventions which describe how communication systems interact with each other
in computer networks. Protocols define the temporal order of the interactions and
the formats of the data units exchanged. Communication protocols comprise a
WIDE range of different functions and mechanisms, such as the sending and receiv-
ing of data units, their coding/decoding, error control mechanisms, timer control,
flow control, and many others.

This book provides the essential design techniques for radio systems that
operate at frequencies of 3 MHz to 100 GHz and which will be employed in
the telecommunication service. We may also call these wireless systems,
wireless being synonymous with radio, Telecommunications is a vibrant indus-

upsurge in radio has been the IEEE and its 802 committees. We now devote

It is more than a decade since GSM was first commercially available. After some unexpected delay, it
seems that finally UMTS is here to stay as a 3G system standardised by 3GPP, at least for another ten
years. UMTS will enable multi-service, multi-rate and flexible IP native-based mobile technologies to be
used in WIDE area scenarios and also pave the way for a smooth transition from circuit switched voice
networks to mobile packet services.

Ultra-WIDEband (UWB) technology enables high data-rate short-range communica-
tion, in excess of hundredmegabit-per-secondsand up to multi-gigabit-per-seconds,
over a WIDE spectrum of frequencies, while keeping power consumption at low lev-
els. This low power operation results in a less-interfering co-existence with other
existed communication technologies (e.g., UNII bands).
In addition to carrying a huge amount of data over a distance of up to 230 feet
at very low power (less than 0.5mW), the UWB signal has the ability to penetrate
through the doors and other obstacles that tend to reflect signals at more limited
bandwidths and higher power densities.

This book is an outgrowth of the pioneering development work done by InterDigital Com-
munication Corporation in 3rd Generation TDD WCDMA Technology. Many engineers
and managers were involved in this development, which spanned a WIDE range of tech-
nology areas, including system architecture, radio interface, radio modem design, radio
resource management and hardware/software implementation. In addition, TDD WCDMA
technology had many direct and indirect contributors across the globe in the context of
