This book addresses the issues on the development of next generation CDMA technologies and
contains a lot of information on the subject from both the open literature and my own research
activities in the last fifteen years.

Digital radios have undergone an astonishing evolution in the last century. Born as a set of simple and
power-hungry electrical and electromechanical devices for low data rate transmission of telegraph data
in the Marconi age, they have transformed, thanks to substantial advances in electronic technology,
into a set of small, reliable and sophisticated integrated devices supporting broadband multimedia
communications. This, however, would not have been possible unless significant progress had been
made in recent decades in the field of signal processing algorithms for baseband and passband signals.
In fact, the core of any modern digital radio consists of a set of algorithms running over programmable
electronic hardware. This book stems from the research and teaching activities of its co-authors in
the field of algorithmic techniques for wireless communications. A huge body of technical literature
has accumulated in the last four decades in this area, and an extensive coverage of all its important
aspects in a single textbook is impossible. For this reason, we have selected a few important topics
and, for ease of reading, organized them into two parts.

The Raspberry Pi has become a computing phenomenon. This single-board miniature
computer, first released in February 2012 by the Raspberry Pi Foundation, has grown into
a series of nearly a dozen models that have sold a total of more than 10 million units in
five years.
Inexpensive to buy and to run, Raspberry Pi computers are great for enthusiasts,
good for games, and fun for children. Raspberry Pi computers are also terrific in the
classroom, enabling you to put on each desk an easily-manageable computer on which
students can do everything from learning Internet use and essential office software skills,
through grasping programming basics in an easy-to-learn format, to performing full-on
programming in Python, Java, C, and other languages. Better yet, you can install all the
software needed for those activities automatically alongside the operating system.

In this research, we have designed, developed implemented a wireless sensor
networks based smart home for safe, sound and secured living environment for
any inhabitant especially elderly living alone. We have explored a methodology
for the development of efficient electronic real time data processing system to
recognize the behaviour of an elderly person. The ability to determine the
wellness of an elderly person living alone in their own home using a robust,
flexible and data driven artificially intelligent system has been investigated. A
framework integrating temporal and spatial contextual information for
determining the wellness of an elderly person has been modelled. A novel
behaviour detection process based on the observed sensor data in performing
essential daily activities has been designed and developed.

Identification is pervasive nowadays in daily life due to many complicated activities such as
bank and library card reading, asset tracking, toll collecting, restricted access to sensitive data
and procedures and target identification. This kind of task can be realized by passwords, bio-
metric data such as fingerprints, barcode, optical character recognition, smart cards and radar.
Radiofrequencyidentification(RFID)isatechniquetoidentifyobjectsbyusingradiosystems.
It is a contactless, usually short distance, wireless data transmission and reception technique
for identification of objects. An RFID system consists of two components: the tag (also called
transponder) and the reader (also called interrogator).

There is an unprecedented enthusiasm for radio frequency
identification (RFID) technologies today. RFID is based on the
exchange of information carried by electromagnetic waves between a
label, or tag, and a reader. This technology is currently in full
economic expansion, which has manifested itself in widely backed
research activities, some of which will be examined in this book.

RFID networks are currently recognized as one a research area of priority. Research
activities related to RFID technology have been booming recently. A number of ongoing
projects are being funded in Europe, Asia, and North America. According to leading
market analysts, the development of the RFID market is projected to increase from
approximately $3 billion in 2005 to $25 billion in 2015. Several countries have dedicated
innovation programs to support and develop RFID systems and related technologies: the
RFID initiative in Taiwan, Ubiquitous Japan and the NSF SBIR program in the USA.
The EU has recently advertised its Strategic Research Roadmap concerning the Internet of
Things, which first of all refers to the RFID technology before being extended to commu-
nicating devices as in M2M (Machine to Machine). In this roadmap, several application
domains have been identified:

Fun. We (your authors) wanted a word to describe our ultimate goal for this book, as well as a word
we hope you (our reader) will use to describe it, and that’s the one we chose. There are others goals,
of course, but in the end, when you’ve finished the book, we’re hoping you’ll have enjoyed the
activities described in these pages.
Many books use the Introduction to explain exactly what the book is about, what the reader will
learn, what the reader needs (a skill or maybe an item or piece of software), and what the reader
will be left with when that last page is completed. And this Introduction will do those things, but …
hopefully it’ll make you excited to get started.

Pattern recognition has its origins in engineering, whereas machine learning grew
out of computer science. However, these activities can be viewed as two facets of
the same field, and together they have undergone substantial development over the
past ten years. In particular, Bayesian methods have grown from a specialist niche to
become mainstream, while graphical models have emerged as a general framework
for describing and applying probabilistic models. Also, the practical applicability of
Bayesian methods has been greatly enhanced through the development of a range of
approximate inference algorithms such as variational Bayes and expectation propa-
gation. Similarly, new models based on kernels have had significant impact on both
algorithms and applications.

Design for manufacturability and statistical design encompass a number
of activities and areas of study spanning the integrated circuit design and
manufacturing worlds. In the early days of the planar integrated circuit, it was
typical for a handful of practitioners working on a particular design to have
a fairly complete understanding of the manufacturing process, the resulting
semiconductor active and passive devices, as well as the resulting circuit -
often composed of as few as tens of devices. With the success of semiconductor
scaling, predicted and - to a certain extent even driven - by Moore’s law, and
the vastly increased complexity of modern nano-meter scale processes and the
billion-device circuits they allow, there came a necessary separation between
the various disciplines.
