The purpose of this application note is to describe the main elements of
an RS-422 and RS-485 system. This application note attempts to cover
enough technical details so that the system designer will have considered all
the important aspects in his data system design. Since both RS-422 and RS-
485 are data transmission systems that use balanced differential signals, it is
appropriate to discuss both systems in the same application note. Throughout
this application note the generic terms of RS-422 and RS-485 will be used to
represent the EIA/TIA-422 and EIA/TIA-485 Standards.
There are many different (and often confusing) terms associated
with clock-based devices. This application note attempts
to clarify these terms, and hence serves as a comprehensive
reference on clock terminology. This application note can be
divided into two sections. The first section describes and distinguishes
between various clock sources available today.
The second section defines and distinguishes between various
parameters used to describe clocks. This section also provides methods of measuring some of these parameters.

The use of FPGAs for cryptographic applications is highly attractive for a variety of reasons but at the same time there are many open issues related to the general security of FPGAs. This contribution attempts to provide a state-of-the-art description of this topic. First, the advantages of reconfigurable hardware for cryptographic applications are discussed from a systems perspective. Second, potential security problems of FPGAs are described in detail, followed by a proposal of a some countermeasure. Third, a list of open research problems is provided. Even though there have been many contributions dealing with the algorithmic
aspects of cryptographic schemes implemented on FPGAs, this contribution appears to be the first comprehensive treatment of system and security aspects.
