At present, there is a strong worldwide push toward bringing fiber closer to indi- vidual homes and businesses. Fiber-to-the-Home/business (FTTH/B) or close to it networks are poised to become the next major success story for optical fiber com- munications. In fact, FTTH connections are currently experiencing double-digit or even higher growth rates, e.g., in the United States the annual growth rate was 112% between September 2006 and September 2007, and their presence can add value of U.S. $4,000–15,000 to the selling price of a home.

One of the very first books published on the social impact of the mobile phone was Timo Kopomaa’s The City in Your Pocket: Birth of the Mobile Information Society. The book, published in 2000, was based on research that Kopomaa had under- taken for Nokia and Sonera as part of his doctoral studies in the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies at the Helsinki University of Technology. The first line he writes in the book is peculiar: ‘Mobile communication is not a serious matter’. By this, we assume he is referring to a view of the world that would regard the mobile phone as little more than an unremarkable fact of everyday life – a simple play- thing for the young, or a productivity tool for the business executive and busy parent.

The first practical examples of mobile communications were used in many countries like the USA, the UK and Germany in military services, and played a significant role in the First World War to transfer important information from the front to headquarters to take further actions. Good and secure wireless communications were an important need for all military services – army, navy and air force. In this respect, the Second World War was a big experimental battlefield for the development and evolution of mobile radio. It was in the interests of governments that after the Second World War the military investment should be paid back by civilian use, and all western European countries started their so-called first generation of mobile communication networks.
