The need for accurate monitoring and analysis of sequential data arises in many scientic, industrial
and nancial problems. Although the Kalman lter is effective in the linear-Gaussian
case, new methods of dealing with sequential data are required with non-standard models.
Recently, there has been renewed interest in simulation-based techniques. The basic idea behind
these techniques is that the current state of knowledge is encapsulated in a representative
sample from the appropriate posterior distribution. As time goes on, the sample evolves and
adapts recursively in accordance with newly acquired data. We give a critical review of recent
developments, by reference to oil well monitoring, ion channel monitoring and tracking
problems, and propose some alternative algorithms that avoid the weaknesses of the current
methods.

Gloptipoly 3 is intended to solve, or at least approximate, the Generalized Problem of
Moments (GPM), an infinite-dimensional optimization problem which can be viewed as
an extension of the classical problem of moments [8]. From a theoretical viewpoint, the
GPM has developments and impact in various areas of mathematics such as algebra,
Fourier analysis, functional analysis, operator theory, probability and statistics, to cite
a few. In addition, and despite a rather simple and short formulation, the GPM has a
large number of important applications in various fields such as optimization, probability,
finance, control, signal processing, chemistry, cristallography, tomography, etc. For an

The literature of cryptography has a curious history. Secrecy, of course, has always played a central
role, but until the First World War, important developments appeared in print in a more or less
timely fashion and the field moved forward in much the same way as other specialized disciplines.
As late as 1918, one of the most influential cryptanalytic papers of the twentieth century, William F.
Friedman’s monograph The Index of Coincidence and Its Applications in Cryptography, appeared as
a research report of the private Riverbank Laboratories [577]. And this, despite the fact that the work
had been done as part of the war effort. In the same year Edward H. Hebern of Oakland, California
filed the first patent for a rotor machine [710], the device destined to be a mainstay of military
cryptography for nearly 50 years.
