The present work, Advanced Process engineering Control, is intended to be the
continuation of the authors? Basic Process engineering Control published by
DeGruyter in 2014. It presents the main and conventional type control loops in process
industries. Titles containing the concept of process engineering were deliberately
chosen to suggest the inclusion, within the same approach, of processes other than
the traditional ones. These come from outside the traditional fields of chemistry and
petrochemistry: the sphere of pharmaceuticals, wastewater management, water puri-
fication, water reserve management, construction material industry, food processing,
household or automotive industries.

My association with the theory of controls in continuous time started during my studies at
the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India, in 1974 as an undergraduate student
in the Controls and Power program. The initial introduction by Professors Kesavamurthy,
Y. P. Singh, and Rajagopalan laid the foundation for a good basic understanding of the
subject matter. This pursuit and further advanced study in the field of digital controls
continued during my days as a graduate student in the Electrical and Systems engineering
Department at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, from 1983 to 1988.

Striking developments have taken place since 1980 in feedback control theory. The subject has be-
come both more rigorous and more applicable. The rigor is not for its own sake, but rather that even
in an engineering discipline rigor can lead to clarity and to methodical solutions to problems. The
applicability is a consequence both of new problem formulations and new mathematical solutions
to these problems. Moreover, computers and software have changed the way engineering design is
done. These developments suggest a fresh presentation of the subject, one that exploits these new
developments while emphasizing their connection with classical control.

This introductory chapter is devoted to reviewing the fundamental ideas of
control from a multivariable point of view. In some cases, the mathematics
and operations on systems (modelling, pole placement, etc.), as previously
treated in introductory courses and textbooks, convey to the readers an un-
realistic image of systems engineering. The simplifying assumptions, simple
examples and “perfect” model set-up usually used in these scenarios present
the control problem as a pure mathematical problem, sometimes losing the
physical meaning of the involved concepts and operations. We try to empha-
sise the engineering implication of some of these concepts and, before entering
into a detailed treatment of the different topics, a general qualitative overview
is provided in this chapter.

This book will discuss the topic of Control Systems, which is an interdisciplinary engineering
topic. Methods considered here will consist of both "Classical" control methods, and
"Modern" control methods. Also, discretely sampled systems (digital/computer systems) will
be considered in parallel with the more common analog methods. This book will not focus

Pattern recognition has its origins in engineering, whereas machine learning grew
out of computer science. However, these activities can be viewed as two facets of
the same field, and together they have undergone substantial development over the
past ten years. In particular, Bayesian methods have grown from a specialist niche to
become mainstream, while graphical models have emerged as a general framework
for describing and applying probabilistic models. Also, the practical applicability of
Bayesian methods has been greatly enhanced through the development of a range of
approximate inference algorithms such as variational Bayes and expectation propa-
gation. Similarly, new models based on kernels have had significant impact on both
algorithms and applications.
