The Internet of Things is considered to be the next big opportunity, and challenge, for the
Internet engineering community, users of technology, companies and society as a whole. It
involves connecting embedded devices such as sensors, home appliances, weather stations
and even toys to Internet Protocol (IP) based networks. The number of IP-enabled embedded
devices is increasing rapidly, and although hard to estimate, will surely outnumber the
number of personal computers (PCs) and servers in the future. With the advances made over
the past decade in microcontroller,low-power radio, battery and microelectronic technology,
the trend in the industry is for smart embedded devices (called smart objects) to become
IP-enabled, and an integral part of the latest services on the Internet. These services are no
longer cyber, just including data created by humans, but are to become very connected to the
physical world around us by including sensor data, the monitoring and control of machines,
and other kinds of physical context. We call this latest frontier of the Internet, consisting of
wireless low-power embedded devices, the Wireless Embedded Internet. Applications that
this new frontier of the Internet enable are critical to the sustainability, efficiency and safety
of society and include home and building automation, healthcare, energy efficiency, smart
grids and environmental monitoring to name just a few.

accounts for about 2–6% of the energy consumption worldwide, and a significant por-
tion of this is contributed by the wireless and mobile communications industry. With
the proliferation of wireless data applications, wireless technology continues to increase
worldwide at an unprecedented growth rate. This has resulted in an increased number
of installed base stations and higher demand on power grids and device power usage,

Short-range communications is one of the most relevant as well as diversified fields of en-
deavour in wireless communications. As such, it has been a subject of intense research and
development worldwide, particularly in the last decade. There is no reason to believe that this
trend will decline. On the contrary, the rapidly crystallizing vision of a hyper-connected world
will certainly strengthen the role of short-range communications in the future. Concepts such
as wireless social networks, Internet of things, car communications, home and office network-
ing, wireless grids and personal communications heavily rely on short-range communications
technology.

The large-scale deployment of the smart grid (SG) paradigm could play a strategic role in
supporting the evolution of conventional electrical grids toward active, flexible and self-
healing web energy networks composed of distributed and cooperative energy resources.
From a conceptual point of view, the SG is the convergence of information and
operational technologies applied to the electric grid, providing sustainable options to
customers and improved security. Advances in research on SGs could increase the
efficiency of modern electrical power systems by: (i) supporting the massive penetration
of small-scale distributed and dispersed generators; (ii) facilitating the integration of
pervasive synchronized metering systems; (iii) improving the interaction and cooperation
between the network components; and (iv) allowing the wider deployment of self-healing
and proactive control/protection paradigms.

The solid high-polymer-film-type fuel cell (PEM-FC) system is used as the power
supply equipment for transportation and replaces an internal combustion engine. A
reduction of the environmental load is expected through the cogeneration system’s
(CGS) use of the PEM-FC system as a distributed power supply to individual
houses, apartments, and so forth [1–3]. The growing use of distributed power
systems, such as fuel cells, the reduction of power-transmission losses, and an
increase of waste heat recovery are expected. Therefore, the reduction of carbon-
dioxide emission is also expected as compared to conventional energy supply
methods using commercial electric power.

storage solutions for balancing fluctuations in electricity grids resulting from the

storage solutions are important because they foster the transition from the usage
of fossil energy carriers towards cleaner renewable energy sources. Furthermore,
EV cause less local air pollution and noise emissions compared to conventional
combustion engine vehicles resulting in better air quality especially in urban areas.
Unfortunately, to this day, various technological and economic challenges impede a
broad application of batteries for EV as well as for large scale energy storage and
load leveling in electricity grids.
