By definition, the term “mobile-radio communications” describes any
radio communication link between two terminals of which one or both
are in motion or halted at unspecified locations and of which one may
actually be a fixed terminal such as a base station. This definition
applies to both mobile-to-mobile and mobile-to-fixed radio communica-
tion links. The mobile-to-mobile link could in fact consist of a mobile-
to-fixed-to-mobile radio communication link. The term “mobile” applies
to land vehicles, ships at sea, aircraft, and communications satellites.
In tactical situations, mobile-radio systems may include any or all of
these types of mobile terminals.

Since the principle of multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) was
simultaneously proposed by Khaled Fazel et al. and Nathan Yee et al. at the IEEE
International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications
(PIMRC) in the year 1993, multi-carrier spread spectrum (MC-SS) has rapidly become
one of the most wide spread independent research topics on the field of mobile radio
communications. Therefore, the International Workshop on Multi-Carrier Spread
Spectrum (MC-SS) was initiated in the year 1997. Multi-carrier and spread spectrum
systems with their generic air interface and adaptive technologies are considered as
potential candidates to fulfill the requirements of next generation mobile communications
systems.

Notwithstanding its infancy, wireless mesh networking (WMN) is a hot and
growing field. Wireless mesh networks began in the military, but have since
become of great interest for commercial use in the last decade, both in local
area networks and metropolitan area networks. The attractiveness of mesh
networks comes from their ability to interconnect either mobile or fixed
devices with radio interfaces, to share information dynamically, or simply to
extend range through multi-hopping.

Advances in communication and networking technologies are rapidly making ubiq-
uitous network connectivity a reality. Wireless networks are indispensable for
supporting such access anywhere and at any time. Among various types of wire-
less networks, multihop wireless networks (MWNs) have been attracting increasing
attention for decades due to its broad civilian and military applications. Basically,
a MWN is a network of nodes connected by wireless communication links. Due
to the limited transmission range of the radio, many pairs of nodes in MWNs may
not be able to communicate directly, hence they need other intermediate nodes to
forward packets for them. Routing in such networks is an important issue and it
poses great challenges.

This book is about multipoint cooperative communication, a key technology to
overcome the long-standing problem of limited transmission rate caused by inter-
point interference. However, the multipoint cooperative communication is not an
isolated technology. Instead, it covers a vast range of research areas such as the
multiple-input multiple-outputsystem, the relay network, channel state information
issues, inter-point radio resource management operations, coordinated or joint
transmissions, etc. We suppose that any attempt trying to thoroughly analyze the
multipoint cooperative communication technology might end up working on a
cyclopedia for modern communication systems and easily get lost in discussing all
kinds of cooperative communication schemes as well as the associated models and
their variations.

his research aims at creating broadband tunable, fully integrated filters for the application of
cognitive radio and signal classification receivers. The approach under study is the N-path filter
technique which is capable of translating a baseband impedance to a reference frequency creating
a tunable filter. The traditional N-path filter suffers from fundamental architectural limitations,
namely : a trade-off between insertion loss and out-of-band rejection, reference clock feed-
through, and jammer power handling limitations. In the first approach, the fundamental trade-
off of the traditional N-path filter between insertion loss and out-of-band rejection is improved by
a transmission line (T-line) N-path filter technique.

Rapid growth of wireless communication services in recent decades has created
a huge demand of radio spectrum. Spectrum scarcity and utilization inefficiency
limit the development of wireless networks. Cognitive radio is a promising tech-
nology that allows secondary users to reuse the underutilized licensed spectrum of
primary users. The major challenge for spectrum sharing is to achieve high spectrum
efficiency while making non-intrusive access to the licensed bands. This requires in-
formation of availability and quality of channel resources at secondary transmitters,
however, is difficult to be obtained perfectly in practice.

The purpose of this book is to introduce the concept of the Multiple Input Multiple Output
(MIMO) radio channel, which is an intelligent communication method based upon using
multiple antennas. The book opens by explaining MIMO in layman’s terms to help stu-
dents and people in industry working in related areas become easily familiarised with the
concept. Therefore the structure of the book will be carefully arranged to allow a user to
progress steadily through the chapters and understand the fundamental and mathematical
principles behind MIMO through the visual and explanatory way in which they will be
written. It is the intention that several references will also be provided, leading to further
reading in this highly researched technology.

Wireless means different things to different people. For this book, it refers
to the radio systems that provide point-to-point, point-to-multipoint, and
Earth-space communications over transmission links that propagate outside
buildings through the lower atmosphere. Wireless systems are being built
that provide data transmission between computers and other devices on
one’s own desk. These are part of the wireless world but not the part where,
except for interference perhaps, the atmosphere has any influence. The intent
of this book is to provide a description of the physical phenomena that can
affect propagation through the atmosphere, present sample measurements
and statistics, and provide models that system designers can use to calculate
their link budgets and estimate the limitations the atmosphere may place on
their design.

Thanks for purchasing the RFI Pocket Guide. The
purpose of this guide to help you identify, locate
and resolve radio frequency interference (RFI). It
includes some basic theory and measurement
techniques and there are a number of handy
references, tables, and equations that you may
find useful. The focus is to assist both amateur
radio operators, as well as commercial broadcast
and communications engineers, in resolving a
variety of common interference issues.
