極化polarisation,指事物在一定條件下發(fā)生兩極分化,使其性質相對于原來狀態(tài)有所偏離的現(xiàn)象。如分子極化(偶極矩增大)、光子極化(偏振)、電極極化等。表征均勻平面波的電場矢量(或磁場矢量)在空間指向變化的性質,通過一給定點上正弦波的電場矢量E末端的軌跡來具體說明。光學上稱之為偏振。按電場矢量軌跡的特點它可分為線極化、圓極化和橢圓極化三種。由于H的方向和E的方向之間有明確的關系,因此沒有必要另行描述H的特性。
