Today wireless is becoming the leader in communication choices among
users. It is not anymore a backup solution for nomadic travellers but really a
newmoodnaturallyusedeverywhereevenwhenthewiredcommunicationsare
possible. Many technologies evolve then continuously, changing the telecom-
munication world. We talk about wireless local area networks (WLANs), wire-
less personal area networks (WPANs), wireless metropolitan area networks
(WMANs), wireless wide area networks (WWANs), mobile ad hoc networks
(MANETs), wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and mesh networks. Since we
can find today a multitude of wireless technologies we decided to group a
numberofcomplementarytechnologiesintoonedocumenttomakeiteasierfor

Digital radios have undergone an astonishing evolution in the last century. Born as a set of simple and
power-hungry electrical and electromechanical devices for low data rate transmission of telegraph data
in the Marconi age, they have transformed, thanks to substantial advances in electronic technology,
into a set of small, reliable and sophisticated integrated devices supporting broadband multimedia
communications. This, however, would not have been possible unless significant progress had been
made in recent decades in the field of signal processing algorithms for baseband and passband signals.
In fact, the core of any modern digital radio consists of a set of algorithms running over programmable
electronic hardware. This book stems from the research and teaching activities of its co-authors in
the field of algorithmic techniques for wireless communications. A huge body of technical literature
has accumulated in the last four decades in this area, and an extensive coverage of all its important
aspects in a single textbook is impossible. For this reason, we have selected a few important topics
and, for ease of reading, organized them into two parts.

The continuous progress in modern power device technology is increasingly
supported by power-specific modeling methodologies and dedicated simulation
tools. These enable the detailed analysis of operational principles on the the device
and on the system level; in particular, they allow the designer to perform trade-
off studies by investigating the operation of competing design variants in a very
early stage of the development process. Furthermore, using predictive computer
simulation makes it possible to analyze the device and system behavior not only

Although state of the art in many typical machine learning tasks, deep learning
algorithmsareverycostly interms ofenergyconsumption,duetotheirlargeamount
of required computations and huge model sizes. Because of this, deep learning
applications on battery-constrained wearables have only been possible through
wireless connections with a resourceful cloud. This setup has several drawbacks.
First, there are privacy concerns. Cloud computing requires users to share their raw
data—images, video, locations, speech—with a remote system. Most users are not
willing to do this. Second, the cloud-setup requires users to be connected all the
time, which is unfeasible given current cellular coverage. Furthermore, real-time
applications require low latency connections, which cannot be guaranteed using
the current communication infrastructure. Finally, wireless connections are very
inefficient—requiringtoo much energyper transferredbit for real-time data transfer
on energy-constrained platforms.

Research on microwave power amplififiers has gained a growing importance demanded by the many continuously developing applications which require such subsystem performance. A broad set of commercial and strategic systems in fact have their overall performance boosted by the power amplififier, the latter becoming an enabling component wherever its effificiency and output power actually allows functionalities and operating modes previously not possible. This is the case for the many wireless systems and battery-operated systems that form the substrate of everyday life, but also of high-performance satellite and dual-use systems.

Wherever possible the overall technique used for this series will be "definition by example" withgeneric formulae included for use in other applications. To make stability analysis easy we will usemore than one tool from our toolbox with data sheet information, tricks, rules-of-thumb, SPICESimulation, and real-world testing all accelerating our design of stable operational amplifier (op amp)circuits. These tools are specifically targeted at voltage feedback op amps with unity-gain bandwidths<20 MHz, although many of the techniques are applicable to any voltage feedback op amp. 20 MHz ischosen because as we increase to higher bandwidth circuits there are other major factors in closing theloop: such as parasitic capacitances on PCBs, parasitic inductances in capacitors, parasitic inductancesand capacitances in resistors, etc. Most of the rules-of-thumb and techniques were developed not justfrom theory but from the actual building of real-world circuits with op amps <20 MHz.
