A few short years ago, the applications for video were somewhat confined—analog was used for broadcast and cable television, VCRs, set-top boxes, televisions and camcorders. Since then, there has been a tremendous and rapid conversion to digital video, mostly based on the MPEG-2 video compression standard. Today, in addition to the legacy DV, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 audio and video com- pression standards, there are three new high- performance video compression standards. These new video codecs offer much higher video compression for a given level of video quality.

The DHRY program performs the dhrystone benchmarks on the 8051. Dhrystone is a general-performance benchmark test originally developed by Reinhold Weicker in 1984. This benchmark is used to measure and compare the performance of different computers or, in this case, the efficiency of the code generated for the same computer by different compilers. The test reports general performance in dhrystones per second. Like most benchmark programs, dhrystone consists of standard code and concentrates on string handling. It uses no floating-point operations. It is heavily influenced by hardware and software design, compiler and linker options, code optimizing, cache memory, wait states, and integer data types. I often need a simple function generator. Just to generate a certain frequency. After all the years I ve worked with electronics, I still haven t got me one. Even though I need it now and then, I just couldn t seem to justify the cost of one. So, standard solution - build one yourself. I designed a simple sinewave generator based on a Analog Devices AD9832 chip. It will generate a sinewave from 0.005 to 12 MHz in 0.005 Hz steps. That s pretty good, and definitely good enough for me ! But while waiting for the AD9832 chip to arrive, I came up with a very simple version of the DDS synth, using just the 2313 and a resistor network.

Boost provides free peer-reviewed portable C++ source libraries. We emphasize libraries that work well with the C++ standard Library. Boost libraries are intended to be widely useful, and usable across a broad spectrum of applications. The Boost license encourages both commercial and non-commercial use. We aim to establish "existing practice" and provide reference implementations so that Boost libraries are suitable for eventual standardization.
