Besides enhanced looks and advanced features, one of the best things about Swing is its pluggable look and feel (PLAF). PLAF architecture allows seamless changes in the appearance of an application and the way an application interacts with the user. However, designing and developing a PLAF is much more exhaustive and complex. On the other hand, themes provide a simple alternative to change look and feel of the swing application. Themes are easier to implement and they enhance the visual appeal of the application UI using the default Java look and feel. Theme mechanism allows a developer to easily specify the default colors, fonts and icons used by the look and feel (L&F). It allows developers to write their own themes giving them a choice to show their application GUI the way they want it, rather than depending on the defaults provided by the system.

The code for this article was written for version 1.0 of the Active Template Library (ATL). The current version of the code (in SieveATL) was built with Visual C++ 6.0 and the ATL provided with that compiler. It may be slightly different than the code shown in the article. The directory SieveMFC contains an MFC version of a component equivalent to the ATL version discussed in the article. It was built with version 5 of the C++ compiler and the MFC version provided with it. The code discussed in the article was later adapted for Hardcore Visual Basic, Second Edition. A digital filter structure for wideband filtering is proposed. It consists of two allpass filters and a linearphase FIR filter. One major advantage of this structure is that the allpass filters are functions of zM which implies that the maximal sample frequency is M times higher for this structure than for the corresponding conventional structures.

In 揚erformance of multi-carrier DS CDMA Systems?we apply a multi-carrier signaling technique to a direct-sequence CDMA system, where a data sequence multiplied by a spreading sequence modulates multiple carriers, rather than a single carrier. The receiver provides a correlator for each carrier, and the outputs of the correlators are combined with a maximal-ratio combiner. This type of signaling has the desirable properties of exhibiting a narrowband interference suppression effect, along with robustness to fading, without requiring the use of either an explicit RAKE structure or an interference suppression filter.
