KphoneSI (kpsi) is a SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) user agent
for Linux, with which you can initiate VoIP (Voice over IP) connections
over the Internet, send Instant Messages, subscribe your friends
presence information and start other applications of your choice
First of all, the Applet-phone is a SIP user-Agent
with audio and text messaging capabilities. But i s also embedded in
an applet where you can use it as usual if your firewall allow you to
use the UDP transport. If not, you can use TCP to carry your voice in a
voice messaging fashion. Your voice is recorded and encoded locally
then sent as a message, decoded and played back by your peer. Voice
messaging allow you to go through any firewall, so that you can
continue to chat and talk with your friends from an applet !
Sofia-SIP is an open-source SIP user-Agent library, compliant
with the IETF RFC3261 specification. It can be used as
a building block for SIP client software for uses such as VoIP,
IM, and many other real-time and person-to-person communication
services. The primary target platform for Sofia-SIP is
GNU/Linux. Sofia-SIP is based on a SIP stack developed at
the Nokia Research Center.
