Wireless technologies like GSM, UMTS, LTE, Wireless LAN and Bluetooth have revolu-
tionized the way we communicate and exchange data by making services like telephony and
Internet access available anytime and from almost anywhere. Today, a great variety of techni-
cal publications offer background information about these technologies but they all fall short
in one way or another. Books covering these technologies usually describe only one of the
systems in detail and are generally too complex as a first introduction. The Internet is also a
good source, but the articles one finds are usually too short and superficial or only deal with
a specific mechanism of one of the systems. For this reason, it was difficult for me to recom-
mend a single publication to students in my telecommunication classes, which I have been
teaching in addition to my work in the wireless telecommunication industry. This book aims
to change this.

In order to improve the spectral efficiency in wireless communications, multiple
antennas are employed at both transmitter and receiver sides, where the resulting
system is referred to as the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. In
MIMO systems, it is usually requiredto detect signals jointly as multiple signals are
transmitted through multiple signal paths between the transmitter and the receiver.
This joint detection becomes the MIMO detection.

Microwave radio network design is a subset of activities that constitute
the overall transmission network design. Transmission networks are
sometimes called transport networks, access networks, or connectivity
networks. For many wireless carriers, microwave is becoming a popu-
lar preference over wireline (leased lines) transport for many reasons,
especially as microwave radio equipment costs decrease and installation
becomes simpler. Low monthly operating costs can undercut those of
typical single (and especially multiple) T1/E1 expenses, proving it to be
more economical over the long term—usually two to four years. Network
operators also like the fact that they can own and control microwave
radio networks instead of relying on other service providers for network
components.

Modeling and simulation of nonlinear systems provide communication system designers
with a tool to predict and verify overall system performance under nonlinearity and
complex communication signals. Traditionally, RF system designers use deterministic
signals (discrete tones), which can be implemented in circuit simulators, to predict the
performance of their nonlinear circuits/systems. However, RF system designers are usually
faced with the problem of predicting system performance when the input to the system
is real-world communication signals which have a random nature.

The goal of this book is to provide a concise but lucid explanation and deriva-
tion of the fundamentals of spread-spectrum communication systems. Although
spread-spectrum communication is a staple topic in textbooks on digital com-
munication, its treatment is usually cursory, and the subject warrants a more
intensive exposition. Originally adopted in military networks as a means of
ensuring secure communication when confronted with the threats of jamming
and interception, spread-spectrum systems are now the core of commercial ap-
plications such as mobile cellular and satellite communication.

Spread-spectrum communication is a core area within the field of digital
communication. Originally used in military networks as countermeasures against
the threats of jamming and interception, spread-spectrum systems are now widely
used in commercial applications and are part of several wireless and mobile
communication standards. Although spread-spectrum communication is a staple
topic in textbooks on digital communication, its treatment is usually cursory. This
book is designed to provide a more intensive examination of the subject that is
suitable for graduate students and practicing engineers with a solid background
in the theory of digital communication. As the title indicates, this book stresses
principles rather than specific current or planned systems, which are described in
manyotherbooks. My goal in this bookis to providea concisebut lucidexplanation
of the fundamentals of spread-spectrum systems with an emphasis on theoretical
principles.

Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) refers to a multiplexing and transmission
scheme in optical telecommunications fibers where different wavelengths, typically
emitted by several lasers, are modulated independently (i.e., they carry independent
information from the transmitters to the receivers). These wavelengths are then
multiplexed in the transmitter by means of passive WDM filters, and likewise they
are separated or demultiplexed in the receiver by means of the same filters or
coherent detection that usually involves a tunable local oscillator (laser).

This is a book on wireless communication. That usually means communica-
tion by radio, though ultrasound and infrared light are also used occasion-
ally. The term “wireless” has come to mean nonbroadcast communication,
usually between individuals who very often use portable or mobile equip-
ment. The term is rather vague, of course, and there are certainly borderline
applications that are called wireless without falling exactly into the above
definition.

Electricity has been chosen as the most convenient and useful form of energy, due
to its ease of transportation over large distances and easy conversion to other
energy forms. The biggest inconvenience with electricity is that it cannot be stored
and must be utilized at the moment of generation. The storage of a large amount of
electrical energy is usually connected with its conversion to other types of energy,
which significantly reduces the efficiency of such processes. The aim of the power
system, often treated as the biggest and the most complex machine ever built, is to
deliver uninterruptible electric energy of demanded quality parameters to
consumers.
