I would like to thank you for purchasing the second edition of “Industrial Network Security,” especially if you are one of the many supporters of the first edition. When the second edition was announced, many people asked me, “why a second edition?” and even more followed that up with, “and why a coauthor?” These ques- tions are harder to answer than you would think.

Under the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) was assigned “primary responsibility to coordinate development of a framework that includes protocols and model standards for information management to achieve interoperability of Smart Grid devices and systems…” [EISA Section 1305]. 35 This responsibility comes at a time when the electric power grid and electric power industry are undergoing the most dramatic transformation in many decades. Very significant investments are being made by industry and the federal government to modernize the power grid. To realize the full benefits of these investments—and the continued investments forecast for the coming decades—there is a continued need to establish effective smart grid 36 standards and protocols for interoperability.

This book is based on a Ph.D. research that has been conducted at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands in collaboration with Dutch Electricity & Gas Distribution Network Operator, Stedin. This book was written as a result of wider interest that was shown by different industry groups on this topic after its public defence. This inspired the author to modify and publish a practical version of the research for a greater international audience. Therefore, the content of this book is intended for a double audience, on the one hand for those interested in the organisational and management aspects of maintenance.

We are very pleased to introduce the proceedings of the First EAI International Conference on Smart Grid Inspired Future Technologies (SmartGIFT 2016). This was the first SmartGIFT conference, aiming to create a forum for researches, developers, and practitioners from both academia and industry to publish their key results and to disseminate state-of-the-art concepts and techniques in all aspects of smart grids. The 37 scientific participants had many fruitful discussions and exchanges that contributed to the success of the conference. Participants from 12 countries made the conference truly international in scope.

It was the publisher’s idea that I write RFID in the Supply Chain: A Guide to Selection and Implementation . Not only am I editor of Enterprise Inte- gration System , Second Edition Handbook and author of The Complete Book of Middleware , I also had some innovative business process and project management ideas on improving the effectiveness of integrating enterprise systems with information on product traceability, the scope of which has been widened by the RFID technology mandates.

LIKE SO MANY OTHERS , THIS BOOK was WRITTEN BECAUSE WE COULDN ’ T FIND ONE LIKE IT . We needed something to hand to all of those people who have come to us asking for “a good book to read on RFID.” When we looked for candidates we found some great books, but most were aimed at electrical engineers or top-level managers, with very little for those of us who are in between. This book is for developers, system and software architects, and project managers, as well as students and professionals in all of the industries impacted by Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) who want to understand how this technology works. As the title suggests, this book is about RFID in general and not just the most recent developments; however, because so much is going on in the area of RFID for the supply chain and especially the Electronic Product Code (EPC), we have devoted consider- able space to these topics. Regardless of the type of RFID work you may be doing, we think you will find something useful here.

To a quantum mechanic the whole universe is one godawful big interacting wavefunction ? but to the rest of us, it’s a world full of separate and distinguishable objects that hurt us when we kick them. At a few months of age, human children recognize objects, expect them to be permanent and move continuously, and display surprise when they aren’t or don’t. We associate visual, tactile, and in some cases audible and olfactory sensations with identifiable physical things. We’re hardwired to understand our environment as being composed of separable things with specific properties and locations. We understand the world in terms of what was where when.

Software-defined radios (SDRs) have been around for more than a decade. The first complete Global Positioning System (GPS) implementation was described by Dennis Akos in 1997. Since then several research groups have presented their contributions. We therefore find it timely to publish an up-to-date text on the sub- ject and at the same time include Galileo, the forthcoming European satellite- based navigation system. Both GPS and Galileo belong to the category of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS).

This book was written by Michael Margolis with Nick Weldin to help you explore the amazing things you can do with Arduino. Arduino is a family of microcontrollers (tiny computers) and a software creation envi- ronment that makes it easy for you to create programs (called sketches) that can interact with the physical world. Things you make with Arduino can sense and respond to touch, sound, position, heat, and light. This type of technology, often referred to as physical computing, is used in all kinds of things, from the iPhone to automobile elec- tronics systems. Arduino makes it possible for anyone—even people with no program- ming or electronics experience—to use this rich and complex technology.

This book is about the Arduino microcontroller and the Arduino concept. The visionary ArduinoteamofMassimoBanzi,DavidCuartielles,TomIgoe,GianlucaMartino, andDavidMellis launchedanewinnovationinmicrocontrollerhardwarein2005,theconceptofopensourcehardware. There approach was to openly share details of microcontroller-based hardware design platforms to stimulate the sharing of ideas and innovation. This concept has been popular in the software world for many years.
