When the authors of this book asked me to write the foreword of
their work on the digital ENTERPRISE, I immediately thought that it was
one more document on a fashionable topic in the technology and the
business world of the 21st Century often addressed by consulting
firms, some of which have aspired to become experts on the subject.
However, a more careful observation reveals that an issue more
important than the sole subject of the digital ENTERPRISE is: “Is your
company fully operational?”, because this is the real topic.
Wireless metropolitan area networks (WirelessMANs) is emerging as a promising
broadband wireless access (BWA) technology to provide high-speed, high bandwidth
efficiency and high-capacity multimedia services for residential as well as ENTERPRISE
applications. It is observed that WirelessMAN (e.g., WiMAX) is even regarded as a 4G
technology. For the success of the WirelessMANs, international standardization organiza-
tions are very actively specifying the standards IEEE 802.16, ETSI HiperMAN and Korea
WiBro.
The wide deployment of wireless networks and mobile technologies, along with the
significant increase in the number of mobile device users, have created a very strong
demand on various wireless-based, mobile-based software application systems and
enabling technologies. This not only provides many new business opportunities and
challenges to wireless and networking service providers, mobile technology ven-
dors, and software industry and solution integrators, butalso changes and enhances
people’s lives in many areas, including communications, information sharing and
exchange, commerce, home environment, education, and entertainment. Business
organizations and government agencies face new pressure fortechnology updatesto
upgrade their networking infrastructures with wireless connectivity to enhance
ENTERPRISE-oriented systems and solutions.
Introduction to Radio Frequency Identification (RFID): RFID is a
wireless modulation and demodulation technique for automatic
identification of objects, tracking goods, smart logistics, and access con-
trol. RFID is a contactless, usually short‐distance transmission and
reception technique for unique ID data transfer from a tagged object to
an interrogator (reader). The generic configuration of an RFID system
comprises (i) an ID data‐carrying tag, (ii) a reader, (iii) a middleware,
and (iv) an ENTERPRISE application.

, I also had some innovative business process and project
management ideas on improving the effectiveness of integrating ENTERPRISE
systems with information on product traceability, the scope of which has
been widened by the RFID technology mandates.
Although doing science is at the heart of discovery, the effort would have
very limited consequence in the long term without writingscience. As a social
ENTERPRISE that depends on collaboration, scientific inquiry requires its practi-
tioners to write on a regular basis. From time to time, some members of the
scientific community have been critical of the overall quality of writing by re-
searchers.
