Wireless communications, together with its applications and underlying technologies, is among today’s most active areas of technology development. The very rapid pace of im- provements in both custom and programmable integrated circuits for signal processing ap- plications has led to the justfiable view of advanced signal processing as a key enabler of the aggressively escalating capacity demands of emerging wireless systems. Consequently, there has been a tremendous and very widespread effort on the part of the research community to develop novel signal processing techniques that can fulfill this promise.

Often without realising, many of us are carrying in our pockets fully equipped with all necessary sensors complete inertial navigation systems that not so long ago were available only for advanced vehicles in sea, land, air or space. Accelerometers and gyroscopes are found in specifications of any gadget supposed to react to user movements. My association with the theory of controls in continuous time started during my studies at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India, in 1974 as an undergraduate student in the Controls and Power program. The initial introduction by Professors Kesavamurthy, Y. P. Singh, and Rajagopalan laid the foundation for a good basic understanding of the subject matter. This pursuit and further advanced study in the field of digital controls continued during my days as a graduate student in the Electrical and Systems Engineering Department at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, from 1983 to 1988.
