This application note explains the process of eveloping and debugging a hardware abstraction layer (HAL) software device driver, to aid device driver development for the HAL of the Altera Nios® II system. The various software development stages are illustrated using the Altera_Avalon_UART as an example hardware device, and an example of a HAL software device driver called my_uart.

This control is another extension to the now standard and widely used ListView control. I have included some of the more common features: shaded columns, column sorting (with data type), but the real addition is the FILTERBAR features of the header. This implementation eliminates all of the work of dealing with the filter messages and item filtering by incorporating it into the control. This could have been implemented as delegates, but we create controls to do the work for us, don t we? I would like to thank Carlos H. Perez since a lot of the implementation came from examples he set with his ListViewEx control.

The use of FPGAs for cryptographic applications is highly attractive for a variety of reasons but at the same time there are many open issues related to the general security of FPGAs. This contribution attempts to provide a state-of-the-art description of this topic. First, the advantages of reconfigurable hardware for cryptographic applications are discussed from a systems perspective. Second, potential security problems of FPGAs are described in detail, followed by a proposal of a some countermeasure. Third, a list of open research problems is provided. Even though there have been many contributions dealing with the algorithmic aspects of cryptographic schemes implemented on FPGAs, this contribution appears to be the first comprehensive treatment of system and security aspects.
