Wireless mesh NETWORKS began in the military, but have since become of great interest for commercial use in the last decade, both in local area NETWORKS and metropolitan area NETWORKS. The attractiveness of mesh NETWORKS comes from their ability to interconnect either mobile or fixed devices with radio interfaces, to share information dynamically, or simply to extend range through multi-hopping.

  • Multihop+Wireless+NETWORKS

    Advances in communication and networking technologies are rapidly making ubiq- uitous network connectivity a reality. Wireless NETWORKS are indispensable for supporting such access anywhere and at any time. Among various types of wire- less NETWORKS, multihop wireless NETWORKS (MWNs) have been attracting increasing attention for decades due to its broad civilian and military applications. Basically, a MWN is a network of nodes connected by wireless communication links. Due to the limited transmission range of the radio, many pairs of nodes in MWNs may not be able to communicate directly, hence they need other intermediate nodes to forward packets for them. Routing in such NETWORKS is an important issue and it poses great challenges.

    The roots of this book were planted about a decade ago. At that time, I became increasingly convinced that wide-area and metropolitan-area NETWORKS, where much of my group’s research has been centered at that time, were in good shape. Although research in these fields was (and still is) needed, that’s not where the networking bottleneck seemed to be. Rather, the bottleneck was (and still is in many places) in the access NETWORKS, which choked users’ access to information and services. It was clear to me that the long-term solution to that problem has to involve optical fiber access NETWORKS.

  • Stochastic Geometry and Wireless NETWORKS Volume I

    Part I provides a compact survey on classical stochastic geometry models. The basic models defined in this part will be used and extended throughout the whole monograph, and in particular to SINR based models. Note however that these classical stochastic models can be used in a variety of contexts which go far beyond the modeling of wireless NETWORKS. Chapter 1 reviews the definition and basic properties of Poisson point processes in Euclidean space. We review key operations on Poisson point processes (thinning, superposition, displacement) as well as key formulas like Campbell’s formula. Chapter 2 is focused on properties of the spatial shot-noise process: its continuity properties, its Laplace transform, its moments etc. Both additive and max shot-noise processes are studied. Chapter 3 bears on coverage processes, and in particular on the Boolean model. Its basic coverage characteristics are reviewed. We also give a brief account of its percolation properties. Chapter 4 studies random tessellations; the main focus is on Poisson–Voronoi tessellations and cells. We also discuss various random objects associated with bivariate point processes such as the set of points of the first point process that fall in a Voronoi cell w.r.t. the second point process.
